Knox Co. early voting starts one week from today

Early voting for the February 5th 2008 Presidential Preference and Knox County Primary elections begins one week from today on Wednesday, January 16th and continues through Friday, January 31st. There are new locations, and there will be extra locations and extended hours for the last three days. More details after the jump. A flyer from the Knox County Election Commission is attached. Say, did you notice there is a Knox County Primary? There are 73 candidates for 19 different offices, including Sheriff, Trustee, County Clerk, Register of Deeds, Property Assessor, County Law Director, and Criminal Court Judge Div. II. There are also School Board candidates in districts 2, 3, 5, and 8, and County Commission candidates for 1-A, 2-B, 4-A, 4-B, 5-C, 6-A, 8-B, and 9-A. Turnout is expected to be high, possibly a record, so vote early and vote often! The News Sentinel is profiling the candidates in a series of articles such as this one today. Unfortunately, they are not organized into one place that I can find on their website. If it's there, they've made it impossible to find (for me anyway). They have a few candidate videos loosely organized here. Just like the rest of the media, the News Sentinel is focused on the Presidential primaries, which are front page news while local candidates are B3 material. They have a "Voice of the Voters" feature in which they are following nine local voters with videos and forums, which is pretty useless and boring if you ask me. (I know. Nobody asked me.) We encourage the News Sentinel to focus more on the unprecedented (partly because of the KNS lawsuit) local races and give voters a place for one stop shopping. We get all the presidential primary news we need from the AP wires that are available anywhere on the internet or by watching any random five minutes of CNN or MSNBC. UPDATE: I'm told there will be a local Election Guide coming out this Sunday. If you don't already subscribe, it might be a good idea to pick up a paper at the news stand. Anyway, early voting details and a list of Knox County primary candidates after the jump... Hopefully these will give voters yet another view of the hopefuls.
Powell-area voters (and anyone interested), please plan to attend a Community Candidate Forum hosted by the PTAs of Powell elementary, middle, and high schools on Tuesday, January 15 at Powell High School, 2136 Emory Road in Powell.
A candidate "meet and greet" will take place in the high school's front lobby from 6:30 to 7:00 pm and the forum will take place in the adjacent auditorium from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.
Candidates invited and confirmed to be present are the five candidates for County Commission, Sixth District (Seat A), as well as Indya Kincannon and Cindy Buttry, unopposed candidates for School Board in Districts 2 and 3 respectively.
Retired WBIR news anchor Bill Williams will moderate the forum, which will follow a timed question-and-answer format.
All are welcome.

Don't forget the League of Women Voter's forum for the
Fourth district, next Tuesday (the 15th) at West High
School. 7pm, I believe.
WNOX had the first of their Tuesday morning/evening forums,
with Trustee candidates yesterday AM and Fourth District
Commission candidates last night. Look on their calendar
for next Tuesday.
Last night was pretty lively, both for the "A" and "B" seat shows.
I have a rough recording of the 4-B show, and am asking WNOX if I
can post it on my web site.

2) In the primary election, can everyone vote for every district to select the candidates for each district?
3) But in the actual election in Nov, we can vote for any candidate of either party - but only for local candidates in our district?
Can someone point me to a place that explains this? Thanks!
The county general election is in August, not November.

Bird Dog, your recollection of the city election process may be causing you confusion.
In the city's primary election, a voter selects just the primary candidate he wants for his own district.
In the city's general election, that same voter then gets to vote for candidates in every district.
The county process is different. In county elections, for both the primary and the general, a voter may only vote for candidates in his own district.
Clear as mud???

Yes.
2) In the primary election, can everyone vote for every district to select the candidates for each district?
No. You can only vote for candidates in your district.
3) But in the actual election in Nov, we can vote for any candidate of either party - but only for local candidates in our district?
Correct. (Except as Betty noted, the local races are in August, at the same time as the state primaries for U.S. House and Senate and the TN House and even numbered Senate districts.)
So, in the city we vote for every councilperson, but in the county - only our district?
There are so few Dem candidates for Feb... Dem don't get to vote for many offices in Feb, and Reps will have some offices that have only one candidate, e.g., Bolus, that to vote against the candidate, we either have to leave it blank, or write in Ronald McDonald?
A good argument for non-partisan local elections...
