I'm in the process of moving some domains and servers around, and trying to consolidate them all in one place.

Best I can tell, I have 43 business and personal domains registered (28 of them actually point to something). How many do you have?

Also, I had a bunch of them with Network Solutions, mainly because that was the only registrar when they were first setup. Now I'm transferring them all to GoDaddy, mainly to have them all in one place but also because it's a lot less expensive.

I don't use any of GoDaddy's other services like email or hosting, but I'm curious if there's any real difference in registrars or if there is some reason, other than the owner's politics, not to use GoDaddy (especially for the mission-critical business domains)?

How much do domain renewals

How much do domain renewals (per year) cost on godaddy?

I've never used them because they just seem like the walmart of registrars, but I've never been really pleased with any registrar I've used (dotster, namecheap, bluehost).

I think the latest batch was

I think the latest batch was $7.99 for .com/.net and $6.99 for .org, plus .20 ICANN fee for transfers.

New domains are currently $9.99 for .com/.net and $6.99 for .org.

A lot better than $35 at Network Solutions!

I have used GoDaddy for all

I have used GoDaddy for all my domain registrations, but I use HostMonster for my hosting for all but one of my domains. The main reason (and one of the only real differences between any of the hosting services that I found) was that HostMonster allows SSH access.

As far as domain registrations go, I moved one from 1and1 to GoDaddy because of GoDaddy's far superior DNS control. I have been very happy with them every time I have used them.

GoDaddy Rocks

I've been using GoDaddy for years. I've got maybe a half dozen domains registered with them.

As an aside, let me offer a cautionary tale about giving up domains. I used to have a domain that was tied to my location. When I moved, I picked up another that better reflected my new digs and let the other expire. Bad idea.

I got a call from my wife, who was still in the Air Force teaching in a military program. Apparently one of her coworkers had followed an old link on her site to my old domain. Within a week of my cancellation, the domain had been snatched up and turned into a porn banner farm. I guess the promoters figured that any domain online for a few years had some traffic, and it was a cheap way to get some eyeballs. The worst part was that the page began with the line "Let me show you some of my favorite sites..." and was followed by about 30 porn banners.

I now mothball any domain that has ever been in active use.

I find GoDaddy to pushy

I find GoDaddy to pushy during the checkout process. I like Dotster for managing several domains. 1and1 has great prices and I've been happy with both their hosting and domain sales ( my affiliate id: (link...) )

jah: What did you not like about Dotster?

Dotster

The last time I renewed on Dotster, it was ~$15. I was lured in by low price to purchase, but when I renewed I was ripped off.

Incidentally, I own twelve domains, I think. I use almost all of them, but only five-six of them are sites and the rest are redirects.

Same here. I have five actual sites, and more than two dozen domain names pointing to them.

I own or co-own 5 domains

I own or co-own 5 domains and get free hosting from a friend that co-locates a machine up east. For email I use Google apps and the Gmail client. The spam through a POP server just got out of hand.

I keep meaning to switch my email to google. Their spam filters are hard to beat.

namesecure, joyent

I have about 50 some-odd domains registered, and have moved them all to NameSecure, the low-cost brand owned by NetSol. They're competitive on price with GoDaddy, and aren't nearly as pushy. Their domain name management tools are clean and simple to use. Renewals are same price as initial registrations, and they send out a regular account status email (monthly or quarterly) which is helpful to ID expiring domains well in advance (I learned the hard way what happens when you fail to renew on time).

I host with Joyent on their old TextDrive shared server, though I'll be launching a new site/app on their Accelerator product this year. Very happy with their service.

Oh, and I moved my primary domain email to Gmail using IMAP a while back. Spam filters are outstanding, all (or all that I care about) IMAP protocols are supported, and I get to use the Gmail web UI when I'm not at my primary computer.

A quotient of One

Man, I feel kind of inadequate with only one little domain ($15/year).

Registered and hosted through powweb -- (these guys). Mainly I just use the 300GB ftp space, and $85 per year seems like a pretty good deal compared to the pathetic online storage I get from Comcast. I haven't shopped around for a couple years, so I suppose there are better and cheaper options now...

3 Registered, 2 Active

I was at PowWeb for a while, but they couldn't keep their servers up to the (mild, honestly) performance standards we needed. No idea who else was on the server hammering it, or if there was another cause. Ran immediately to a2hosting, and with a 20% coupon, I got a much more reliable host with secure shell access for the same money. And they already had LaTeX installed on the server I was on, so I can render higher math in my blog whenever I need to.

definitely not recommending them

I think PowWeb sold to someone else about a year ago. Personally, I know of only one time (about a month ago) when their servers pooped out for about 3 hours--I happened to be trying to transfer some files for a project, and my upload dropped to dial-up speed which was pretty maddening. Their status page reported everything going just peachy, and I couldn't get anyone on the phone--the most irritating part of the ordeal.

I'll keep a2hosting in mind for when my current pay period expires.

GoDaddy's okay by me

I have about three dozen domains registered with GoDaddy. No problems, no complaints.

One of these days, I'm going to do something with "backthefuckoff.com."

(NB - I don't use them for email - for that, I wholeheartedly recommend tuffmail.com)
