Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto was assassinated
Submitted by bizgrrl on Thu, 2007/12/27 - 9:59am.
Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide bombing that also killed at least 20 others at a campaign rally, a party aide and a military official said.
Bhutto was no saint, but she at least understood that in order for Pakistan to progress there had to be democratic reconciliation among all of the Pakistanis and a state of detente with India. I will bet a dollar to a donut that the ISI (Pakistani Secret Service) was behind this and there will be an accusation against India. Not to sound Digitish: But is this the Franz Ferdinand moment in South Asia?

I guess we're going to have to invade Pakistan at some point...We won't have any choice if things get out of control there...
One problem is that Al-Queda and The Taliban have sympathizers in the Pakistani intelligence and military services.
Invading Iraq when it wasn't necessary used up our resources and took our attention away and helped the Taliban and Al-queda in their recruitment so our problems with them have increased exponentially/substantially. This will get a whole lot worse thanks to Bush and the neocon Republicans.
If you have any loved ones in the military they need to get out/leave when they can as soon as they are legally able to do so.

was backed by the miltary there and Iran fell anyway.Military backing may not mean very much to fanatics who have infiltrated the military. So we should be concerned.
To win the so-called war on terror we will have no choice but to pacify the tribal areas of Pakistan and that means an invasion because Musharraf either won't do it or can't do it so we will have to do it for him.

Does this mean the only viable candidate against Musharraf is the man he overthrew? Can Pakistan still vote for Bhutto?
Apparently there was a hit today on Nawaz Sharif's supporters as well... Link...

Bush's idea of spreading democracy through "free and fair elections" is to continue with an election as scheduled even though the leading opposition candidate has been murdered, there is currently no one to replace her, and the only other opposition party says they will now boycott, leaving Musharraf as the only candidate. Bush probably likes how they do business over there.

Pure Kissingerian logic: With Musharraf, who is backed by the military, in power, Pakistan will not fall into Islamist hands.
No empirical evidence to support that position, but you know those guys are all smart and what not. So shut up and take it.

Why isn't Pakistani considered to be the main front in the "war on terror"?

Preident Bush expected to make a statement condemning the assassination.

And offering another 10 billion to bolster Pakistan's role in the war on terror?

Gas prices are up 10 cents more at the Pilot on Broadway than Christmas. I'm assuming this killing gave the oil speculators a good reason.
Oil had been going up this week prior to today. The Turkey/Iraq conflict has had a greater impact on crude prices than today's action.

We lost an advocate of peace and stability in a region that needs them.
