The tax exempt nature of Church property in general bothers me, but this is a much more egregious example of taxpayer subsidy of religion.

Classic Example of the Dichotomy in Knoxville

Mike Edwards is always preaching about improving education, particularly public education, yet taxpayers have lined his wallet so thick, he's tossed his kids in private schools, shirking the public school system, as have a number of overpaid publicly funded employees.

Knoxville is not bond central for the issuance and underwriting of bonds and the bond lawyers jump on anything they can scratch out a fee on, regardless of the merit or the appropriateness of the project in the community's eyes. The Knoxville Convention Center was a huge bond issue, but did the city really need it or did taxpayers really want to pay for it? Probably not, but the bond lawyers made rather sizable fees out of the bond issue, whether or not the project was worthwhile. The project was so ill conceived, city taxpayers subsequently passed a referrendum barring the city from participating in the development of any hotel to serve as a "convention" center hotel.

Now this dormant and sleepy little health and welfare entity is going to issue a bond for additions to a church school, which, whether the project is constitutional or not, raises the question is this a suitable role for a county affiliated bond issuing entity?

As with most things in this community, it depends on who is making the money out of the deal and if the right people are making the money, as Martha Stewart say, it's a good thing.

Edwards isn't getting a dime on this deal, so he's got questions.
