Do you ever get the idea that no one is home in the state capitol? It seems like our congressional committees have been doing a lousy job. The congress was told about the possibility the CIA might destroy these tapes. They were told about "excessive interrogation techniques". They were told we were going to move detainees to a place that would effectively place them on Torture Island for eons without any charges or way to protest their endless incarceration. but they apparently did little to follow up on these things. They should have raised a storm, but all they did was whimper, write a few letters, suggest these might not be good practices and then went silent.

Yes, the Bush administration is primarily responsible for our fall from grace. They've sullied our reputation. They have sunk to illegal practices and activities that make most Americans cringe, but they have also had accomplices in this.
Our congressional committees are a disappointment. If they knew the CIA was planning to destroy these tapes, if they knew we were using rendition tactics to secretly move prisoners to places they could be tortured, they should have stood up and howled.
As it stands no one will ever really know what went on during the two "harsh" interrogations that were conducted on the two men charged as Al Queda operatives. No one will ever know how many people were flown with bags over their heads to countries who think torture is acceptable. Worst of all we will never know what extreme measures might have been used. Dead people don't talk.
Why isn't the CIA eager and willing to save evidence that would prove it has done nothing wrong?
I think the answer to that is obvious.
