Interesting read about the battle between cats and birds, especially feral cats and rarer birds. I solve my part of it by keeping my cat indoors, but I do feel guilty about that occasionally. He is a hunter, and so may be a bit bored inside sometimes. But with other cats, I've had dead birds brought to me as an offering and that is sad.

Man is still the most dangerous species

We destroy habitats to build Wal-Marts. We pour chemicals into rivers that birds need to drink from. We lop off branches and kill trees that used to house nests to permit telephone and electricity lines. Maybe we ought to be the ones kept inside cages. Maybe spay/neuter might work? Human species-centric, profit-minded people destroy birds species. Even Audubon killed at least 100 birds a day. And how many birds ended up sacrificing their lives to provide feathers for ladies hats or in feather dusters? Currently, 9 billion chickens are killed each year for food. We just don't run home with the caracasses in our mouths.

I'm a spay and neuter advocate. I like birds and cats. Cats who constantly kill, who have strong hunter instincts, should have a collar with a bell to prevent them from sneaking up on prey. Mostly my cat lays around while birds hop about the yard. Every now and then he will chase one for fun. Twice over the past ten years he has caught a bird, usually a baby wren or chickadee. My neighbors have taken down their feeders because they don't like the mess these birds make. They consider the birds pests.

cats and birds

I've had neutered indoor/outdoor cats and lived by neutered feral cats for years. None of these guys seem interested in birds. If they show interest at all its usually by laying in the sun and making chirping noises as the birds go by. The only things I've seen them kill are mice.
