I just practically stole an album from iTunes, but it is only for the old folks. The Very Best of Julie London has fifty of her more satisfying songs and get this, they are 256 kbps unprotected AAC files, all for twenty-five bucks.

I wonder what he was drinking to get that effect.

She really was special. Velvety and smooth voice too.

The song I remember best was Misty. I think there was an album by the same name. Julie London deserves to be timeless. Oh, and I did I say knock down gorgeous? That's a fantastic video too, a visual poem.

You may want to sample Sarah Vaughan's Misty, also available at iTunes. I first discovered it in the fifties when it was on the flip side of my all-time favorite Vaughan effort, Broken Hearted Melody.

I wore that single out along with Little Richard's Lucille.

Ah, yes. I have heard that one, beautiful stuff!

My favorite jazz singer for the past few years has been Shirley Horn. I took part in an outdoor jazz/poetry event that featured her in Key West. She has a deep, slow magical voice.

"Lucille"? Yeah, cool! I also liked "Long Tall Sally" a whole lot..

Julie is among the more

Julie is among the more popular song 'stylists' of the mid-fifties, but not quite in the league with Chris Connor or Anita O'Day. I just found "Julie Is Her Name" on vinyl for $0.35 at a thrift store. Throw away your earbuds and get a record player!

Wow and Flutter?

Those of us with direct drive turntables have a tendency to look down our noses at those who refer to them as "record players".

I once bought seven copies of Also Sprach Zarathustra on Deutsche Grammophon vinyl just to try to get one with fewer pops and tics in the quieter passages. Virgin vinyl discs are pretty good but I've had enough music recorded on recycled shower shoes.

I have digitized a lot of my old vinyl and it sounds pretty good when the PC is connected through a tape loop into my old system.

I didn't save any of the vinyl Zarathustras.

Just as a trivial thought, nowhere in the iPod specs is there any mention of wow and flutter.

It's hit or miss with

It's hit or miss with Deutsche Grammophon. They're either silent or horribly noisy. But they are re-issuing some of their titles on audiophile vinyl - at $30 each.

One of the best Zarathustras, though, is the Reiner recording on RCA Victor. The original, recorded in 1954, was pressed only in mono, but sounds amazing even by today's digital standard. It can be found occasionally in a thrift store for $1 or less. I think it's also available on CD.

Thanks for the tip on the Zarathustra. I'll look for it. Some of the old RCA Victor Red Seal recordings were pretty good as I recall. I meant to post this link the other day but I forgot. Notice how quickly the pickup crosses that disc.
