A lucky UT student who attends at least ten of fourteen Lady Vols home basketball games will win one year's free tuition, courtesy of the Lady Vols. Second prize ain't too shabby, either. Read all about it here.

What if the university gave full scholarships on the basis of academic performance, rather than how many basketball games the student has been to? Might that not be a better indicator of their academic potential?

Damn. I wondered how long it would take the haters to weigh in on this.
Chad's probably gone to the football game, so I'm going to stand in for him on this one.
The "university" isn't footing the bill for this. The funds for this promotion come from booster donations. This is an attempt to boost student attendance at Lady Vols games, which is traditionally rather abysmal. Last year, this team had an average GPA of above a 3.0. Pat Summitt has a 100 percent graduation rate and Lady Vols alumnae are doctors and lawyers and coaches and TV commentators and successful business owners. This promotion is not taking a dollar away from any academic pursuit in the known universe, and I fail to see how attempting to support women's athletics hurts anyone except misogynist whiners.
Normally, I am a hater, but you are right. It is no different from the Tennessee Titans running a promotion to pay someone's mortgage for a year at a game or the like.

What if they did it for people who want to be students but haven't got the money to even start?
No, seriously, Pat is full of class and everybody knows that the Lady Vols aren't just sports folks. To play for her, you have to also hit the academic books, not just the play books. I think it's exciting.

There are all kinds of academic scholarship and grant programs for all kinds of students. There's also the Hope Scholarships available for anyone. This is just a promotion to put students in seats at home games. They could have given away a Vespa or something. I think this is better.
Uhh, yes, I was at the game (though after Vandy scored the third quarter TD I did threaten to mail my Kentucky tickets to Mike Hamilton...frustrating game for about 2.5 quarters). Sounds like a good promotion for the Lady Vols. Thanks for the info Bean.

Nah, what am I saying? That's crazy talk.
