Go Vols?
Submitted by R. Neal on Sat, 2007/10/20 - 2:47pm.
We're cruising down I-81 @ ~70MPH listening to this train wreck of a ball game on XM 144 (XM Sports Nation).
Just wanted to make one post from the actual road (wireless mobile broadband is pretty cool). Wish there was something better to talk about than Bama 41, Vols 17. OK, then.
UPDATE: And that's that. Thought it was going to be even worse there at the end.
Using Verizon. Works pretty good, better than hotel wi-fi in some cases.
It supports two networks, "broadband rev-a" (high speed comparable to DSL) and "national access" (or something like that) which is more like ISDN or 2X dialup.
The broadband rev-a works in most metro areas and along most interstate corridors. The slower connection appears to work anywhere you can get a cellphone signal.
One or the other worked every where and every time we used it on this trip.
The highlight of my bi-annual trip to Tuscaloosa was Dreamland BBQ on Friday night and tailgating with friends from Bama before the game. The game, well...left much to be desired.
The trip to Starkville last weekend was better, what with Old Hickory Steakhouse in Columbus, MS and a win.
Oh, we did listen to the Kentucky-Florida and LSU-Auburn game on the XM coming back home Sat. night. The LSU football network coverage (XM uses the 'home' team broadcast) included regular election updates from the La. state elections.
Speeding. That could be a whole other blog post. No tickets for us. I'm not sure they do many speed checks along I-81 or other interstates along the way. On most interstates on this trip, the normal speed appeared to be 10-15 mph above the posted speed limit.
I used AAA on-line TripTik to plan the trip north. It has a road advisory regarding New York City.
Alternate Routes:
If you would like to avoid potential congestion areas in the New York City metropolitan area, use the Garden State Parkway (in NJ west of the city) and Interstate 287 and the Tappan Zee Bridge (north of the city) for itineraries between the New England area and points south along the Interstate 95 corridor. See yellow highlighted route on map.
Since I had trouble the three times I drove out of Newark airport, I took it a step further going north. We took 209 and I-84 from Allentown, PA. Returning south we took 287. Both were fine.
We didn't avoid Beantown since we wanted to see the JFK Library and Museum. No real problems. Just expected traffic delays, no more so than downtown Atlanta. On the way to the JFK Library, we got waved down by a woman from Arkansas who now lives in Boston. She liked our "tag". Not sure if she meant the Tennessee license or the Democratic bumper stickers.
If anyone is a AAA member, I highly recommend their on-line triptik for road trips.

The GSP? That's nuts depending on the time of day, though the Tappan Zee Bridge is cool. Bergen and Passaic Counties are gridlock after 4PM to abot 630PM. I would have sent you over the GW Bridge to the Major Deegan to Hutchison River Pkwy to 684 ... um what was that about having trouble at EWR. ;)
About EWR: It's a nightmare, but it is the easiest airport in the metro area for drop off and pick up and isn't nearly as harrowing to get to as JFK or LaGuardia (which I hate).
You should have called on the 287 leg. I'da treated you to lunch at the Oakland Diner in Pompton Lakes. Best Jersey Diner in Jersey.

We should have on the way up. On the way back from road trips we lose enthusiasm and don't do much visiting. We'll probably fly the next time we head up that way. Then, a taxi or car service can worry about getting us around town. I told R several years ago that I would never rent a car out of Newark again.
Care to share what service you are using?

Was that you
Nope, wasn't us. We were somewhere up around Roanoke, just getting off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Were you in VA?

How'd you get around NY and Beantown? 81 to 84? It's out of the way but well worth it.

I took a mini roadtrip up the BRP up to Doughton Park then cut over to Marion Va. to return via I-81. I would have been in Marion when you posted.
The fall colors were fabulous, at least on and west of the Parkway.
