Cortney Piper sent out a press release today saying that she would not seek an appointment to County Commission, but would only serve if elected by the voters to the 2nd District seat. Refreshing, eh?

Refreshing - or practical,
Refreshing - or practical, since Mark Harmon will probably be supporting Amy Broyles again.

Rachel, I would submit
Rachel, I would submit Mark's choice might not mean much, given his realtionship with his colleagues. Not assigning "blame," just saying that Mark doesn't have a lot of allies.
And what kind of horse-trading can they do now, anyhow?

Thanks
Fixed now
Both
Both refreshing and practical - you are probably right that Mark or one of her supporters will nominate Amy, assuming there is some kind of nominating process. But he would need five additional votes for her, and he can't talk to the other commissioners about it.
What if there isn't a quorum to appoint any one of the offices - does it just go on and on until someone gets tired? Who knows what will happen with all these wacky goings-on?
I think practical and
I think practical and refreshing is a good way to put it. I didn't mean to sound like I was slamming Cortney.

Isn't Cortney backed by
Isn't Cortney backed by Billy Tindell? How refreshing.
Here's hoping we get some independent voices on County Commission.
Refreshing????
I'm trying figure out how NOT having Amy or Cortney put in is a good thing. That leaves us with what?
I want the best folks in
I want the best folks in there as soon as possible. Whether it is Amy or Courtney, etc.
How would these appointments factor into term limits for the appointees?
appointments
I seriously doubt Amy would get involved in an appointment process so close to the election, at least I hope she will not. Many that got appointed will look tainted to say the least.
Billy Tindell
I believe Cortney IS independent Rocketsquirrel.
Just because someone has supporters doesn't mean they're not independent. No reason to think that she would give any more or less weight to Billy Tindell's opinions than she would to any other constituent.

Further evidence of her independence
After all, how many people give a flying fig what their exes think :)
Fair Notice:
This steady, low-level smear campaign against Cortney pisses me off.
Doesn't speak well for who's doing it.
It pisses me off too
I assume your notice was aimed at Sym and not me or Rachel, right?
Not at you or Rachel, Nelle.
Not at you or Rachel, Nelle.
Don Daugherty It bothers me
Don Daugherty
It bothers me as well. The Demns have a prime opportunity to gain a lot of ground next year and make a dent into the Commission's GOP majority. If our own candidates and their supporters trash each other, and if Amy does not support Cortney if Cortney wins the primary (or vice versa), then we are going to wind up on the losing end yet again. Dems need to wake up and realize what's going on here.
What if?
Don:
What if neither Amy nor Cortney want to be involved in an appointment process? As a second district Dem, I sure hope you are either working with Amy or another Dem so we don't get stuck with Bolus (or another Republican) again. I was sorry to see Cortney back out so soon but that was her decision and I am sure she has a good reason.
Since commissioners can no longer "lobby" one another, is that something that you can do with the 11 remaining commissioners in your "official" role, especially with the Dems on commission?
You are right that we can win some more Dem seats but that will have to happen now as well as in August. If they get a Republican in district 2 now, wouldn't they have an advantage come August 2008?
Don Daugherty Cortney is not
Don Daugherty
Cortney is not seeking the appointment. I'm not sure about Amy. I'd like to see some credible people who just want to serve the public appointed on a caretaker basis until the elections. I can certainly let the Dems (Tank, Mark) and the more independent thinking GOPs know about any Dem who wants to seek the appointment. Other than that, I doubt my opinion or lobbying would matter to Moore, Lambert, et al. But I'd encourage anyone interested to call me. I really don't think an appointed Commissioner who decides to run will, only this year, have an advantage. It is my understanding that Bolus is not going to seek the appointment either.
Not living in her area, I
Not living in her area, I really did not know much about Ms. Piper. And then when I saw her press release, I thought it was kind of naive. BUT, then I started doing some research on her. Her website is full of very good information, and if she could pull all of that off, she would be an excellent commissioner. I must say, I am definately impressed. It looks like the voters in the 2nd have quite the talent pool to choose from.
Fairly Simple
Those remaining 11 commissioners who truly believe in elections (rather than advantage-giving, faction-enhancing appointments) will name competent care-taker commissioners to serve out the time until the properly elected commissioners are seated.
Simply make a pledge NOT TO RUN a condition for the appointment. -- s.
Don Daugherty S - I would
Don Daugherty
S - I would agree with this as an alternative. It's the best scenario with the circumstances presently presented to us.
a pledge to who? or is it whom?
Sounds good..but what if this person changes their mind??
What if a bunch of people urge them to run???
Just askin
Hmmm
Bill: I guess if a candidates for appointment pledges not to run and then goes back on his/her word and the voters elect him/her then the voters deserve what they get. -- s.
