Good presentation...
succinct and on point. From his mouth to... I guess it'll have to be God's ear, since it has become abundantly clear that George Bush AIN'T listenin'.
Congress seems to need a few hearing aids as well.

Whoa! I'm shocked, a democratic congress got a left wing 537 to go to the Gulf Coast and find whatever they could to bash the administration on hurricane recovery that is being conducted by a totally corrupt democratic regime in La. Yeah boy that's all the proof I need.
Well ...
They didn't have to look very hard...

I wish you weren't serious.
I wish you weren't serious. If you are, you can probably survive a monster natural disaster with no money, no gas, no food, no place to go. If you are, you can probably re-build you house with your own hands since the insurance company won't pay. If you are, I bet you wouldn't mind moving to Houston, Atlanta, Memphis, with only the clothes on your back and no possibility of returning "home". If you are serious, I am saddened there are so many like yourself in this country that are so hardened there is no feeling left for our neighbors in need.
snark
God sent Katrina as a windfall for the democrats to be mean to those poor ol' republicans?
New Orleans....
was not meant for a significant number of human inhabitants. The French explorers mistook an indian, seasonal trading camp for a permanent settlement and co-located there. The rest is history. What is needed is a fair and equitable way to preserve and facilitate the depopulation started by Katrina. All the more important with the coming global warming. It is fun to rant and posture about New Orleans and the failure of the Bush administration, but inadvertently he may be preserving the opportunity the gods have provided us to deal with this overdue issue.
Ha Ha! What place was?
No place on earth was ever ideal for a settlement of gadzillion white men with all our lust for more and more...more permenant structures, more chemicals to make stronger tomatoes, more plastic crap than even God could ever have imagined, trash from paper cartons from McDonalds, beer cans everywhere, A/C and electric gadgets demanding more and more power grids, and of course the destruction of a sustainable environment in order to park all those cars. Even the air and rivers are burdened with toxic chemicals. It's not the place or the space, it's mismanagement that causes most of the problems.
Everyone knew the levees might collapse. Why did the government do nothing? We all saw the nightmare after Katrina. Why didn't the government rush in to save the people? We all see that as of now little help from Washington is trickling down to New Orleans. Why is the government so callous? Very likely the cause is people who think like you do, who see a wonderful opportunity to solve the levee problem by just getting rid of the city. Other cities in the world are located below sea level with levees that work. What? Is our American engineering just too dumb to build them? Are we spending too much in Iraq (and now maybe Iran) to maintain our infrastructures?
It takes tremendous gall to suggest that such a major tragedy, so many unnecessary deaths, and so much neglect by Washington, could be a gift! I don't know what kind of God you worship, but he sure isn't my kind of God. Heartlessness has never been an attribute of the true Divine. That distorted mean-spirited God-image so many people of "faith" worship, who has only sin on his mind, and revenge for anyone who takes a mis-step, is a bogey-man made up by ancient priests to scare people. God is love, pure and simple. It's a fact that is often debated, but it is in the end the absolute Truth. Anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded...and sometimes even dangerous.
You have, you know, used his name in vain by saying what you did, so say seven Hail Mary's and run around the block.
"Everyone knew the levees
"Everyone knew the levees might collapse. Why did the government do nothing? We all saw the nightmare after Katrina. Why didn't the government rush in to save the people?"
Because the LOCAL parish Levee Board (much like County Commission) controlled the money coming in to maintain the levees - but they spent the money on more visible (vote getting) projects "for the people".
Because the LOCAL government (Blanco & Nagin) failed to issue timely evacuation orders and use local resources (like all the city & school buses that flooded) to evacuate the people without cars. Who knew people would not leave their pets, stockpile water, have emergency food on hand? The threat of hurricanes is widely ignored in South Louisiana.
And then there's FEMA - what a joke!
Hmm, let's "depopulate" San
Hmm, let's "depopulate" San Francisco, Los Angeles, St. Louis, and Memphis because they sit on major earthquake faults and will be devastated when a "big one" finally hits. Let's "depopulate" Portland & Seattle since they're so close to potentially active volcanoes.
And once we get New Orleans cleared out we can start on Miami, which is also endangered by global warming.
Look, snark aside, there is plenty to think about in rebuilding New Orleans with respect to how to handle future flooding (some areas may need to be left as green space, etc.). But just casually suggesting we "depopulate" a place thousands of people call home is pretty damn callous.
"The difficulty lies not so much in developing new ideas as in escaping from old ones." - John Maynard Keynes
I can't wait to hear this
I can't wait to hear this rationale once San Francisco is subject to another 8.0 earthquake.

Link, please. Please show how this money was supposedly misappropriated.
Bull-oney. A mandatory evacuation order was issued the day that it was apparent where the landfall would be. So now politicians are supposed to have better abilities to forecast weather than the National Hurricane Center?
Other things to keep in mind:
Nagin is a Republican.
FEMA has been a trainwreck because this administration didn't care to support it. Faith-based and/or free enterprise just doesn't work for addressing humanitarian concerns. (NOTE: "faith-based" modifies "enterprise" in this sentence. Things like "Operation Blessing," e.g.)

Levee Boards
good question - here is one link that I found:
(link...)
Is the Orleans Levee Board doing its job?
Critics allege corruption, charge the board with wasteful spending
FREE VIDEO
New Orleans levee board negligent?
Sept. 14: An NBC News investigation reveals that the New Orleans levee board spent millions on pet projects that had nothing to do with protecting the city. Correspondent Lisa Myers has the story.
******
I watched the Katrina coverage with great interest - as part of the South La. diaspora from the oil bust in the 80's - and still with lots of family there. Political corruption is a way of life and "point of pride" in South La.
The hurricane did little damage in NOLA - it was the failed levee's that caused the flooding.
The Corps of Engineers
The Corps of Engineers DESIGNED and built the levees. They themselves have admitted to the greatest engineering failure in the history of this country. Why can't you admit it to yourself? New Orleanians all know this. You have been away from home too long.
Been watching "The War" by
Been watching "The War" by Ken Burns on PBS.
If we, the people, the country, our government wanted to help those on the Gulf Coast affected by the devastation of Katrina, it is obviously possible. Temporary bridges can be built in a day or two. Whole communities for thousands can be built in months.
The devastation resulting from the storm's winds and flooding are not something that can be corrected by a local community. Holland proved years ago a city like New Orleans can be preserved.
This laissez faire attitude cannot continue or, IMO, our great country will no longer be great.
Myth number one: A lack of federal money
(link...)
Three myths about the Katrina recovery efforts.
Local governments control the disbursement of federal funds, e.g., do you now where the millions in Empowerment Zone dollars have gone locally?
Louisiana government has been the bottleneck to the recovery efforts - contrast that with Missisippi's recovery. see Myth number two.
Bird dog, Come down to
Bird dog,
Come down to my mom's home in Pass Christian MS and look at the empty slabs and tell me again what a wonderful job the MS state government is doing. Reason Magazine is a partisan hack job. Open your reading to include all political perspectives. I learned this the hard way. I had to live the lies of the this adminstration to see what they are - lies and spin. America deserves better than that.
good question - here is one
The single allegation comes from a former Republican levee board official. Nowhere is there an offer of proof.
Don't be fooled by this kind of journalism. "Is the Orleans Levee Board doing its job?" is not a rhetorical question. It needs to have an answer, and that story doesn't offer a conclusive case either way.
From a glibertarian thinktank called the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, one with ties to Citizens for a Sound Economy? This is a reliable source?

I guess the fact that the levees failed is not a conclusive answer... Oh well.
I guess the fact that the
You said that it was the misappropriation of funds that was the cause of the under-engineered levees. Show your work.
