The Obama campaign told the leaders of the Service Employees International Union in a private meeting earlier this week that a candidate would need $80 million to $100 million to compete in the unprecedented 25 states that hold elections in the first month of voting — and only Obama and Clinton can do that.

Edwards is a sentimental favorite of many in the union. But after hearing the presentation the leaders postponed their decision whether to endorse him until after the third quarter campaign finance deadline.

Edwards is now going for public financing for his presidential campaign.

There's got to be a better way. We should be ashamed of ourselves for letting this get out of hand. As Edwards said, "This is not healthy. ... This campaign should not be a fundraising contest."

Good catch. This is

Good catch.

This is bullshit. You are right. We should be ashamed of ourselves. But I guess you have to at least give Obama credit for "telling the American people the truth" as he kept emphasizing in the debate, however unpleasant the truth may be.

I'm liking Edwards more and more. Too bad he probably can't get the nomination.

This is exactly why we need

This is exactly why we need public funding of elections, at all levels. Next year, the various candidates will spend in the billions. Would you rather an honest election, or yet another less aircraft carrier? Which will do more for national security?

I'm coming around to this point of view. On the one hand, there's an argument that money (from contributors) equals free speech. On the other hand, a) a lot (most?) of that money comes from special interests, and b) should we be selling public offices to the highest bidder?

Seems like that's what it has come down to.
