Defense attorney Jeralyn Merritt spent some time reviewing media reports on the events surrounding the Jena 6 arrests and resulting "peace" march in Jena, La.
While I still can't make judgments as to much of the story, I have no problem declaring the case one of prosecutorial over-charging and abuse of a system that allows prosecutors discretion in charging juveniles as adults. I think the only reason the kids were charged with such serious felonies was to get Mychal Bell, then a juvenile, into adult court.
Throughout the last couple of weeks I would hear or read a report on one particular event only to later not be able to recover the information. I appreciate the breakdown of events provided by Ms. Merritt.
This Jena problem may or may not be a race issue. I do believe, from what I have seen in the court systems, money and a good attorney are critical to getting a fair trial. It doesn't always work, but it really helps.

I found this one well researched too...some added facts
The Executive Director of Friends of Justice, Alan Bean, has issued this report on the Jena 6 case. It includes his well-researched reconstruction of the events that led to the arrest of the Jena 6, including the noose incident and the school fire, based on extensive interviews and archival research in the town. It also includes recommendations for how the local school system, the District Attorney, the police, and the Justice department should respond to this crisis. This reporton the Jena crisis informed the current CNN story on the show NOW, hosted by Paula Zahn.

Can't open your file Carole...
Can you convert to PDF or something and attach it?

Try this?
It was a PDF file linked from this site. Maybe going directly was the problem. The link on this site says Jena 6 Summary.

Carole, any file with a DOC
Carole, any file with a DOC extension would not be considered a PDF file (e.g. responding_to_the_crisis_in_jena11.doc). A file with a DOC extension is usually a MS Word document. A file with a PDF extension is an Adobe Acrobat file. Most people prefer not to open Word documents over the Internet. Theoretically, MS Word documents are more likely to have viruses than Adobe Acrobat PDF documents.
Thus, if your link or reference has a DOC extension or you don't know what it is, it's better not to use it.
If you already knew this, I apologize. Just trying to clarify why your earlier link was not a PDF file. Or, PDF files should not be renamed with a DOC extension.
Hmm...thanks for that information
I guess now that you pointed it out, I should not have called it a PDF file. I'm not very technical. I just saw a box that asked me something and clicked on it. It took a few second to come up, so I thought it was a PDF.
No, I wasn't aware of the Word document over the Internet concern. Thanks for telling me. I won't post anymore of those in blogland again.
kid in Ga.
Someone still needs to help the kid in Ga. facing a decade in prison for having oral sex at age 18 with his 15 yearold girlfriend, even though they've changed the law while he has been sitting in there waiting on a new trial. My goodness, you could arrest half the kids at high school dances for this stuff. The Jena 6 have their own troubles, though I have questions about both sides of the issue. Selective outrage bugs me, from the right and the left.
