The US military intervention in Iraq has cost Knoxville taxpayers $160 million since 2003 - about one full year's city budget. National protests against the continued intervention and occupation are scheduled for Saturday, September 15. Knoxville will once again participate by standing for peace at the corner of Kingston Pike and Morrell Road (near West Town Mall) between 11 am and 2 pm. Candidates running for local office are invited to join the action.

Wow. That's an amazing number. Where'd that come from? It certainly brings it home.

"Where'd that come from?"

here's their explanation:

We calculated each state's share of taxes paid into federal funds revenues (based on IRS data). This includes individual income taxes, corporate income taxes, excise, gift and estate taxes. Each state's share of taxes was then multiplied by the total amount of the war.

The city and county calculations are based on the population and median household income of the city relative to the state.
