Editorial in bad taste

I read the Sentinel's labor day editorial yesterday that lauded Americans for taking less time off that any other industrialized nation and said that many people held down two full time jobs because they wanted to. They should have mentioned that we are unhealthier than most industrialized nations and that more and more people work two jobs because wages haven't kept up with prices. I'm sure most people would appreciate better vacation time like the Europeans. Bush sure takes advantage of it. However, I was happy to read on Sunday that Odom Construction has amicably unionized.

I don't think most Americans have any idea of the amount of social benefits that Europeans have, including vacation time, retirement benefits, universal healthcare, etc. The mass media, especially right-wing radio, repeat the mantra that the poorest American has a better lifestyle than the richest European. After all, we have bigger houses, bigger cars, bigger food, women with bigger--well, you get the idea. Those poor Europeans have to live in tiny houses, drive tiny cars, etc.
The idea that working Americans would be proud of being "productive" is just amazing. Didn't anyone hear about Lincoln ending slavery?
