You know. I can simply click on the arrows repeatedly to change the numbers. Although I do seem limited to a couple of clicks. I can change the post from -7 to -5 and I can change the comment from 0 to 1 then to -1 and then flip from 1 to -1 over and over.

I think it's just letting you change your vote from up to down or down to up. There doesn't seem to be a way to cancel out your vote altogether. Once you click, you are committed to one or the other!

Where does the offending post go? I figured maybe it'd just go to the end of the current day's posts or something, but it seems to be banished entirely. It's probably a good idea to be able to push them down the page, but are readers responsible and (in my case) smart enough to handle that kind of power?
For example, the negative vote (here) was me thinking that the arrows were some sort of newfangled scroll button. Maybe there would be fewer inadvertent clicks if the arrows only show when the full post node is opened.

Thanks for pointing that out. I hadn't noticed the view content-->blogs area before. Obviously I haven't explored every feature and corner of the site, so please take my opinions and observations with a big grain of salt!
From a human interface perspective, maybe if the arrows were down by the point total there would be more of a visual connection to what happens when you click up or down. Typographically, locating them at the end also might encourage a more constructive reading sequence (read first, then vote if inspired one way or the other).
Or just leave it the way it is, and we'll all figure out eventually.
I clicked the 'check mark" and the "x" on a few of the responses to this post and got the following graphic when I went to the main page:
* User Justin earned 1 points! Total now is 456 points.
* User Justin earned 1 points! Total now is 457 points.
* User Justin earned 1 points! Total now is 458 points.
It looks like you can vote on your own post too.
edit* looks like I'm losing points now! :)
* User R. Neal earned 3 points! Total now is 18938 points.
* User Justin lost 3 points! Total now is 455 points.

Yeah, the whole "points" thing is a little goofy, but the vote up/down thing requires it so I thought I'd see how it works.
I guess it's supposed to encourage participation.
I have turned all of it off for now, just wanted to see how it might work in terms of "community driven moderation". I'm not quite seeing how to make it work effectively and fairly to be beneficial, but I will look at it all some more.
It would probably be more appropriate if we changed it so all posts go to the back pages and users promote them to the front pages by voting for them instead of against them.
But all of that is starting to sound like a lot of work for me and everyone else, and too "competitive" or something. Or, I guess maybe it could be called "participation"?
You could try the green cubes/red cubes thing. If a user (vs a post) gets too many red cubes they cant post to the front page...then again it doesn't seem to be too big of a problem right now. We seem to have a "well behaved" forum compared to some other sites in the hinterlands.

The "points" system would enable something like that (if I could figure out all the scoring). I was thinking about throwing the front door open again for anybody to post, and using something mechanism to let the community moderate it so I don't have to.
But the system we have now seems to be working OK. I'm not sure, will have to think about it some more.

I was sorta hoping the points might be redeemable, like S&H Green Stamps.

Cool. Guess that feature works. Thanks all!

They just get moved off the front page. You can still see them from the view content --> blogs link.
Still thinking through how all this will work.
Only people who are allowed to post on the front page are allowed to vote a front page post up or down.
I might change the graphic to something mroe obvious, but not sure what that would be.

Rollover text that says "promote post"/"demote post" would help.

I respectfully suggest a lobster giving either the thumbs up or thumbs down.
Wait, do lobsters have thumbs?
Rikki, the ajax/jscript or whatever the guy is using apparently doesn't allow for rollover text. I think there's a request in for that though.
ST, I would like to reposition them, I'm still trying to figure out how that works, if it's themable, etc.
Hopefully the new graphics are a little more intuitive?

I can't seem to locate the arrows.

I was steeling myself for the inevitable depression I would suffer due to the almost instant banishment to the toilet all my inane posts deserve.
Thank you for having second thoughts on this venture.
