This could be a doozy! Yank those vintage clothes out of your closet, get your women friends together and come toast those brave Tennessee heroines who got us the vote.

Step back into 1912 with the Suffrage Coalition and the East Tennessee Historical Society in Downtown Knoxville on Market Square, August 26, 2007, from 5:00 to 7:00pm. Dozens of re-enactors in period clothes will mingle with the crowd discussing the issues and events of the final years of the 72-year struggle for women's right to vote. Woodrow Wilson will be there (running for his first term) as will his opponent, then incumbent President William Howard Taft. Lawyers from 1912 will be there as well (some pro-suffrage, some anti-suffrage) and dozens of 1912 Suffragists, including many of those Tennessee Women honored on the Memorial.
There will be a special re-enactment of the July 11, 1912 speech Knoxvillian Lizzie Crozier French gave to the state Bar Association, making her the first woman to address that body. A Victorian Tea with vintage delicacies will add to the ambiance. An original impressionist oil painting by artist Aleex Conner commemorating last year's unveiling of the Tennessee Woman Suffrage Memorial will be auctioned. Signed, numbered prints will also be available. There will also be a silent auction of items donated by local businesses. Entertainment will be provided by a barbershop quartet, and the Susan Bees (with Suffrage songs) will also be back by popular demand.
All of these events are free to the public except for the Tea, which has limited seating and a cost of $10.00 per person. Tickets will be sold at the event on a first come, first served basis. Come be a part of this living history in your vintage clothes or just as you are. Select downtown merchants will be offering post-event suffrage specials for dinner, drinks and merchandise.
