off the city's website:

"Regal Entertainment Group (NYSE: RGC), a leading motion picture exhibitor owning and operating the largest theatre circuit in the United States, today announced that the grand opening date for Regal Cinemas Riviera Stadium 8 will be Friday, August 31."

so how come regal doesn't own this one? (or, can anyone name another case of a city building a new movie theater with taxpayer money?)

Fed up with trying to attract movie theaters to town, Granite City (Mo.) may simply build its own.

At the end of the month, residents will get to hear the details of a plan for the city to build its own movie theater. The city would fund a three-screen theater out of tax increment financing (TIF) district funds, and Trivers Architectural Associates has been hired to design the proposed theater.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 27 at City Hall. It is primarily an informational meeting, economic developer John Ferry said.

"It's because the demand is so high -- we hear about it nearly every day," Ferry said. "We don't want to manage it; hopefully, we want to get a private movie theater company to manage it."
