It seems like sometimes it doesn't. I can feel air coming through but the fan doesn't come on every time. Is this normal?

Carole, I presume you mean
Carole, I presume you mean your air conditioning blades? Can you describe your unit for me? Location? Make and model?
It is a Janitrol
It's on the side of my house. It says model PHK024-1. It comes on sometimes, but other times doesn't. I thought it might be beacsue I didn't turn the thermostat to OFF before changing the temperature to higher or lower, but that doesn't seem to hold true. Do you have to do that? Now I'm beginning to suspect the thermostat, as the fan DOES obviously work. It's mounted so close to a corner of the wall, it's hard to take the cover off. I'm not sure the little tab you slide from COLD to HEAT etc, Is actually always making a contact. I hate calling in a repair guy for nothing. So far I've just limped along. It works about 80% of the time. Thanks for replying...
Ah. Well the fan will work
Ah. Well the fan will work when the air conditioning is engaged, that's part of it...when the hot air is blown out you are basically exchanging the tepid air inside with a portion of recirculated(and cool) air.
You most likely do have an electrical issue inside. Unfortunately, without seeing your control panel that's about all I can tell you.
An old college roommate of mine's family was in the HVAC business and I interned(loosely used) a summer with them.
There are little tricks you can use to bypass the more common issues with thermostats but as I mentioned, a trained eye needs to see what you have.
If your home is cool and it works as you say 4 times out of 5 I would recommend waiting till fall. Lots of companies are out now charging freon(a racket I might add) so your service might be several days forthcoming if you call.
I don't know you or your situation, but if you have health issues or elderly visitors etc. don't wait.
Just get an annual service
It may not be anything. You are supposed to get an annual service, where they do I do not know what, but the man I use has always been fair and nothing bad has happened so far.
Now it seems to be working fine...
I really can't afford to have someone come out right now. If things revert to worse, I will. I opened the cover and noticed that the little tab that moves to the different modes didn't seem far enough over, so I gently moved it. Maybe that was the problem. The faceplate is difficult to put on and take off because of it's location. Maybe the opening where the swith-over tab comes out wasn't going far enough over. Anyway thanks to everybody for all the suggestions. I'm cool for now...By the way Tess...who do you use?
