Eric "Bearded Liberal" Alterman proclaims, "many liberals are no less woolly-headed and simple-minded about illegal immigration than they were (and still sometimes are) about welfare."

He then exclaims, "If a fence is the best way to enforce those choices [respect for the law and preventing abuse of undocumented workers], well, then, why not? For symbolic reasons? I don't care about 'symbolic reasons.' I care about reality."

That's a mighty big "if." My question is, When in human history has a border barrier/fence/wall prevented movement without the credible threat that violators will be met with violent force? I know the Michelle Malkins of the world have no objection, but are we really prepared to start shooting unarmed peasant farmers on sight?

Another pet peeve: the "rule

Another pet peeve: the "rule of law" talking point. The rule of law pertains to the government, not the governed, you morons.

A fence to keep out Mexicans

A fence to keep out Mexicans is maybe the stupidest political stunt in the history of America. I even heard one right wing talk show host entertain the idea of a fence right down the middle of the Rio Grande to maintain water rights.

Environmentally it will be a disaster.

Politically it's a loser in a big way, except for crass politicians playing to their basest base.

I totally favor controlling our borders and who does or does not comr in to the USA but this idea is as stupid as it gets.

Oh yeah...the ranchers whose land it will be built on don't want the fence either.

And another thing...

What kind of fence are they going to build to keep out the Chiness who are flooding in at a pretty impressive rate, too?

And one more...

If you got a mouse problem, there are several ways to deal with it.

You can build something costly, ugly, and symbolic of nothing good (which won't work anyway) to keep out the mice.

You can quit putting out cheese.

You can deal with the people in your house who are in the business of selling mouse turds.

The other day when Bill

The other day when Bill Richardson threw his hat into the ring, he reminded us that building a ten foot fence only encourages people to get an eleven foot ladder.

The fence would be good theater, but that is what government seems to be all about lately.

Governor William J. LePetomaine described it best when he said, "We've gotta protect our phoney baloney jobs, gentlemen!"

It's just mindblowing isn't

It's just mindblowing isn't it? People balk at actually fixing the levies in NOLA, yet don't even flinch at a completely worthless fence for $70 million a mile, sans guards.

At least we'd have a monument to our massive stupidity - until it's sold for scrap.
