Molly Ivins used to tell a story about a friend of hers. He opposed the war through his time in college, and was known to describe it simply as a 'stupid fuckin' war.' When his college years were over, and his deferment ran out (please note, Dick Cheyney!), he enlisted and wound up getting killed in the war. Many years later, she visited the Wall, and finding his name, understandably burst into tears. A man standing by watched her and offered some small condolence. She thanked him, adding, 'It was a stupid fuckin' war.' A lot of people will have a similar story after this one.
