Dick Cheney is laughing at you
I've been feeling a lot like CE Petro lately. You can only sustain the illusion that speaking out will make a difference for so long, and watching the Democrats fail exercise Congressional power is too much to bear. Listening to the cheap-shit apologists declare that impeachment is off the table or that we must go slow and be civil or that we must be realistic is too much to bear. There is no oxymoron more moronic than "Democratic strategist."
Watching Republicans continue to frame every debate is sad, but watching perfectly capable people like metulj and Andy Axel step right into their opponent's frame to smugly wield the sword of logic is sadder still. We've been divided and conquered.
But I'm not the one being
But I'm not the one being righteous. It's you guys who are too good to converse with the rabble, other than to bat them back across the fence. Good grief, man, in the video of Brach you put on YouTube the other day, you delight in catching him in a logical inconsistency. He was alternating between smiling and crying. What's the point?
...watching perfectly
I think you have exactly every idea how much I and my family continue to sacrifice in order to try to effect some change in this pathetic state of the union.
This is not a one-day battle.
You may not agree with my point of view, or how I've chosen to engage the battle, but you should know we're on the same side.
Sorry if that offends your "principles."
(For what it's worth, I've not ever said that impeachment should be off the table. I've pointed out that it's never going to happen. You think I like it? I don't. That hardly amounts to being "conquered.")
Fuck it -- on second thought, I'm not sorry.

For what it's worth, I've not ever said that impeachment should be off the table. I've pointed out that it's never going to happen.
It's not worth much. The weatherman puts more effort into telling me it's going to be sunny this afternoon, and I already know that too.
I know you and I are on the same side of most issues. I know I'm on the same side of many issues with CBT and Johnny Ringo too. We're all Americans, and we all have lungs. Office holders in this country reliably represent the interests of perhaps two percent of the population, and they hold power by garnering votes from just over half of the fifth of the people who actually vote. We are divided, and we are conquered.
CE Petro is giving in to despair, but it's not Bill O'Reilly who pushed her over the edge. It's all of us, especially those of us who should know better than to get trapped in the divisive goo. You guys are happy to stomp on retards like Mark Shetterly, but you love the "Nader is an egomaniac" drivel too. It's all destructive and divisive.
What's the goal? Where is the prize? Why did both of you respond only to the personal call-out and not the larger context? Soldiers on "your side" are losing hope and retiring from battle.
help, help, I'm being Carlton Fisked!
BTW, you are a pussy liberal fag.
I hear it's going to be sunny this afternoon too.
It hadn't occurred to me that goals and prizes and strategies are "sports terms," but maybe I can dislodge you guys from the tiny, personal context by quoting CE Petro's refrain, "Money trumps lives." Why don't you go read her missive and forget I ever said anything.
It's you guys who are too
When the "rabble" (your term) joins the fray with, "You pussy liberal fags are just a buncha pussy liberal fags," there's nothing to discuss.

What's the goal? Where is
a) Why do you make the personal call-out, when you don't actually know who's retiring from the battle?
b) "Withdrawal in disgust is not the same as apathy."
I joined the battle by helping Ford's campaign, for one example. I do a lot of personal work behind the scenes which doesn't show up here. I have a number of irons in the fire, but full disclosure wouldn't exactly be prudent in a forum such as this one.
I don't feel the need to share every bit of that with you, or with anyone else, because it's none-ya-bidness. At least out here on the Internets.
And you blame the victims.
Foolmuh once.
Whatever it is for me, I get clobbered with slander and innuendo every time I try to vocalize it in a forum such as this one. Why bother, indeed.

Golly Gee
It appears that I have generated quite an uproar. Perhaps that is a good thing. Rikki nailed it -- it is everyone, in the larger sense (not necessarily particular individuals).
CE Petro is giving in to despair, but it's not Bill O'Reilly who pushed her over the edge. It's all of us, especially those of us who should know better than to get trapped in the divisive goo.
the status quo sucks, and what sucks even more are those that make excuses to return to the status quo, while giving up on the individuals that need the most help.
There are other personal mitigating factors that I did not allude to, nor will I discuss here, that helped me make my decision to take a break. Basically, I need some time to reassess and reorganize my thoughts and my life.
Basically, I need some time
That's an inventory that many of us would like to have more time to take. Best of luck in that endeavor.
And as regards the uproar, let me just say it's hard not to respond to someone making pointed claims and naming names. You caused none of that.
Can I quote you on that the next time some faithful Dem is taking a fresh dump on Rosalind Kurita?

let me just say it's hard not to respond to someone making pointed claims and naming names.
You poor baby. You can't resist a knee-jerk response to anyone, which was my whole point. I called you and metulj out because I know for sure you're both smart enough to use some finesse, yet you don't. You're happy to gobble up easy prey, but why not at least be like a housecat and play with your mouse before you dispatch them?
I can't help but think the territorial behavior just adds up to a lot of lost opportunities to do something more interesting than call each other names.

And while Rikki deplores the level of discourse at KnoxViews, Instapundit is misinforming thousands more people than I ever could:

Is that an attempt to reframe this thread? Can't respond in context, so let's make this about DDT?
I suppose that's not as juvenile as Les and Uncle grabbing their ball and heading home because (though they have their own blogs prominently featured in the RSS feed) they now need permission to post on this site's front page. Still, it's sad.
JFC, I'm trying to compliment you guys by saying you can do better than just sucker punching trolls, but you can't still your trembling synapses long enough to see I'm asking you to TRY HARDER.
Instapundit is a coward, fuck him. If he ever grows a pair he can ask Randy to let him post where he doesn't have absolute control over the venue. I hope his privileges are half of what Les and Uncle are allowed. If Reynolds had half the intellectual prowess he fancies, he'd have conquered this place in its first month or two. He's a sissy. You, on the other hand, can do better. When his little turdlets wander over here, convert them. It can't be that hard.
I'm trying to compliment you
To what end, exactly? Later down the way you suggest that my mission here should be winning converts?
See, that would require the sort of faith that I just. Don't. Have. Maybe that's where the fundamental disconnect is.
One would like to think so. Yet, therein lies a path to madness.

"Are we supposed to have a video of Chomsky flickering, dimly, on all corners in order to drive some point home?"
Cool, Can we do that? We'll call it ChomskyTube.
Rikki, Axel, Metulj-
I am not real clear what you all are disagreeing about. Is it that Mejjj and Axel are mean to the occasional troll or that they just have a bleaker view of things? What are you all fighting over?
j4
At this point, neither am I.

hammer down
I wasn't trying to disagree with anyone. I was agreeing with CE Petro's sense of futility.
At this point it is clear that Andy and the butterfly consider conservatives hopeless and unworthy, so the only question left is why don't you guys ignore them rather than playing whack-a-mole with them?
Welcome to the First Annual Last Word Competition...
Reply One: Watching Republicans continue to frame every debate is sad, but watching perfectly capable people like metulj and Andy Axel step right into their opponent's frame to smugly wield the sword of logic is sadder still.
You knew exactly what context you were creating, Brer Fox.
Oh, please.
I consider myself to be at cross-purposes with many conservatives, and it's not my job to set them straight. That's a losing proposition.
I will offer resistance to stupidity, shilling, flacking, lies, half-truths, and disinformation, e.g. I will not approach the same situation believing that my interaction is a first step leading to the eventual reform of specific cases of wanton ignorance. If it does? Wonderful. If it doesn't? At least I didn't undertake the fools' errand of seeking to "repair" someone who, truthfully, isn't broken; they're just out of sync with my worldview.
(Does that amount to hopeless? Unworthy? No, it doesn't. But if YOU want to use YOUR time trying to "constructively engage" those folks, then YOU go do it.)
There exists a clearer path to "victory" than trying to flip the opposition to "our side:" Get friggin' organized. Winning converts and nibbling at margins is what Democratic strategists try to do, it's a complete waste of time, it's a losers' game (writ large in the last couple of prez cycles). Conservatives are outnumbered, but they fucking show up when they have to. Our guys & gals don't. That's the whole game.

A lame analogy, expressed in 1985 album covers
1995 reunion: "Sven, I'm so sorry."
hey guys...
um, look, um I type then click that Post Comment button with the same anxiety as when I have to enter freeway traffic at rush hour. I just try to get up to speed, pick a spot to merge and hope like hell I don't get smashed up in the process.
That said- there is a very timely interview with Al Gore over on Taylor Marsh's blog.
