When I read this link to the Washington Post on Google News, I thought, oh, yeah, here's another health hazard that we have been exposed to for years and they're just getting around to revealing that it's gonna kill us all.

As with so many other chemicals common in the household, buttery flavoring in microwave popcorn is apparently relatively harmless to the consumer, but is it killing those who are on the front lines of the manufacturing process?

While critics charge that OSHA has stalled, California is moving ahead. Here, state Assemblywoman Sally Lieber (D) has introduced a bill to ban the use of diacetyl.

I bought a clunky, old fashioned West Bend Stir Crazy popper several years ago at Wally World. It's nowhere near as convenient but I love what it does for plain old bagged popcorn and a little peanut oil.

Heck, just take an ordinary

Heck, just take an ordinary brown paper lunch bag, put a few teaspoons of unpopped kernels in there, fold the end of the bag up a few times to get a decent seal and then put it in the microwave for as long as you normally pop a bag of popcorn. Voila, an actual healthy snack for a fraction of the cost of regualr microwave popcorn.

I just add my own real melted butter and salt and then enjoy. No oil needed, give it a try if you don't believe me. You can even staple the bag closed if you want....and no, the metal staple will not blow up your microwave.

No chemicals, healthier and cheaper.

Thanks for the brown bag

Thanks for the brown bag tip.

(I knew there was a reason I hated microwave "buttered" popcorn, and the smell maked me ill...)

Good advice

I have been doing my popcorn in plain bags for years now, with and without oil. I do it because I am too cheap to spend the extra money for prepackaged junk. If I am going to have junk food, the least I can do is minimize my costs.

has anyone noticed on this

has anyone noticed on this thread discussing something critical about a product, that the Ads by Google on the far right of this page are hawking that same product? Sorta odd, if you ask me, but I reckin' no filtering goes on at Ads by Google.

Wonder if you started a thread entitled something like "Southwest Airlines suck" if the Ads by Google would show up links to the Southwest website.

Popcorn

I'm a Pyrex casserole corn popper myself.

Wierd about the advertizing. I noticed the housing bubble blog has ads for toxic mortgages. Talk about preaching to the wrong crowd.
