Zach Wamp (future hopeful Secretary of Transportation? Secretary of Commerce? or new cabinet post of Secretary of B.S.?) was just on MSNBC saying the eventual GOP nominee, Fred Thompson, will not be at the debate but that he is nonetheless this generation's Great Communicator (evoking the ghost of Ronald Reagan) who speaks to the people with plain talk they can understand.

OK, then.

P.S. Actually, I have to agree with Wamp on one point. Fred Thompson will be the GOP nominee in 2008. He will face off with Al Gore, and Al Gore will win.

Elrod's picture

Nope

Neither will win the nomination. I think Romney will get it in the end. The religious right will tack to him once they accept his Mormonism.

Fred Thompson showed what a dud he was by questioning the patriotism of everyone who opposes the Iraq surge. He's a Dick Cheney candidate who, as Kevin Drum ably put it, "gives Reaganesque pastiche in baritone."

The appeal of Zach Wamp is

The appeal of Zach Wamp is something I've never been able to grasp (much like the subtle charm of Cindy Buttry's plan to zone 200 kids to a school built for 2,000)-- I'm just slow that way.
What is it about a confessed former dope dealer turned religious zealot who has broken his "Contract with America" promise to limit himself to three terms that is so beguiling?
Is it that crazed frat-boy-on-speed look in his eye? The ever-popular ability to convey the conviction that he has an inside track with God?
An extra-nice handshake?
Seriously. This guy wants to run for governor.

Elrod's picture

Dr. Seuss

The appeal of Zach Wamp is his name. It's right out of a Dr. Seuss book. I casually mentioned him to somebody in Michigan the other day and the guy started cracking up. He refused to believe there really is a man named Zach Wamp.

Zach backs an attack on a drack.
He fell over a wamp and sunk into the swamp.
But Zach packed a gack for a crack race track
And he bomped his pomp wamp in the stomp of a blomp.

This is good fun.

That really was good. Reminds me of when early Wamp supporters (who tended to be sawed-off frat boys) used to run around GOP functions hollering "WOMP! WOMP! WOMP!" accompanied by a kind of tomahawk chop motion. It was precious.

I don't know if a Republican

I don't know if a Republican has a chance in 2008. The voting public likes to give each party two terms, with few exceptions. There is Bush fatigue. But, if the Dems put up the wrong candidate (Hillary, Barack Hussein), it will be close and Repubs can win. Plus, a lot can happen over the next year+.

I like Fred as a nominee. I don't think Gulliani can build much more than what he's already got. He's basically peaked. McCain is Bob Dole in '96 (respected war record, old), though McCain does espouse some different views than Dole. Romney might be able to pull it off, but the Mormon thing will make some Christians look for another choice (Fred?). Adding books to the gospel, which some Christians consider to be the definition of a cult, and other Mormon practices (banned or not) will hurt Romney in the South if there is another viable alternative. Plus, "Big Love" returns for another season this year. The other Repubs have about as much chance as Kucinich.

As for tonights debate, my same comments as for the Dem debate last week. It's too early and no one cares, save the politically obsessed who might want to work for a specific candidate.

Some may disagree, but I think trotting Gore out yet again (what is this, his 3rd or 4th run?) is a weak candidate. The opposition will trot out ammunition from the bearded, fat and mad days, in addition to all the things said about him in 2000. It won't make him appear Presidential. Could Gore win? Maybe. But, I think he's a weak candidate.

Hillary, Barack HusseinCBT,

Hillary, Barack Hussein

CBT, the "Barack Hussein" thing was beneath you.

And here's one of my pet peeves - why, oh why, does everybody (not just CBT) call all the others by their last names - Guiliani, Romney, McCain, Gore, etc. etc. - but it's always HILLARY?

Cable news does this too. Obama is "Senator Obama." Clinton is "Hillary."

To be fair, I've heard this from some liberal bloggers, etc.

It drives me nuts. If it's because she's female, it's sexist, and if it's for some other reason, it's just disrespectful of a United States Senator.

And don't tell me it's because she's got a unique name. I don't hear folks going around calling Senator Snowe "Olympia."

Rant over. I'm off to bed.

P.S. And I'm not even a big Clinton fan.

Your comparison of McCain

Your comparison of McCain and Dole is interesting. I can't picture Dole being as friendly to Bushco had he been shafted the way Rove did McCain in South Carolina during the 2000 primaries. An honorable man would have called him out instead of sucking up as McCain did. I've been wrong before, but I like to think that Dole has more integrity than that.

It makes me wonder just what that bunch is holding over McCain's head.

Some say...

"It makes me wonder just what that bunch is holding over McCain's head?"

His black baby. (But I've wondered the same thing...Can you say "domestic spying, boys and girls?)

"CBT, the "Barack Hussein" thing was beneath you."

Oh come on... This is totally expected of any republican operative. It's like this. Ask a conservative what he thinks about Hillary's health care proposal...You get an answer something like, "I heard she was a lesbian."

And Zach is Zach so Hillary can be Hillary. Conservatives are insulting enough without us having to look for things to be offended by.

Yes, but this is the kind of thing most repugs at CBT's level engage in commonly around their own ilk, wink-wink style. CBT has spent a lot of bandwidth here imploring that most Republicans are not this classless. So much for that. It now looks more certain that CBT endorses smearing Americans as terrorist sympathizers, just like his heroes W and Cheney have done and just like they did to defeat Max Cleland.

Didn't he just warn us recently that dirty tactics (like Corker used successfully) would backfire on Dems, if we were to stoop so low? (We haven't/wouldn't.)

Obama

Yes, Barack Hussein Obama is his name. Somehow I don't think CBT mentioned his middle name just to show off his knowledge.

If so, let's discuss Guiliani's middle name, Brownback's middle name, Romney's middle name...

Oh, they're not "Hussein." Well, there you go.

I know, just wasn't sure everyone knew that CBT wasn't making stuff up. Expect to hear it a lot, though.

Too bad Bush's middle name wasn't "Hitler". There would be peace on Earth we all be driving solar powered cars that run on free energy.

The Hillary camp will make

The Hillary camp will make sure you hear a lot about the Hussein name and Obama's background. Much moreso than Republicans, as I predict Obama will not be make it to the general election.

The thing I always remember about Obama is the way his wife introduced him the night he won the U.S. Senate seat. If it's on the 'net or You Tube, check it out. Anytime you can work in 'my baby's daddy' into an intro, well it's memorable.

Rachel, the reason you see and hear "Hillary" is that's how she campaigns. I believe her signs and campaign literature all say 'Hillary' not 'Clinton'. Apparently, it's how she likes it. My guess is it's designed to further establish her own identity.

I'll bet you a lunch that's not so.

Hussein! Hussein! Hussein !

Barack's middle name is clearly a political liability. Hillary may leverage it to her advantage, but the Republicans will have an absolute field day (as CBT honestly states). If there is anything positive about the early election season, it's that his middle name will be somewhat old news by the first primary vote, never mind the general.

Two years ago, I thought Obama did not have a shot in hell of winning due to his name and race. Then another African-American candidate with major name liability ran for Senate. When Harold Ford Jr came within 2.5% of winning in a red state, Obama had real evidence that he has a legitimate chance. Assuming he can get by Senator Clinton ;), Obama won't have to win Tennessee, but if he can match the states that Kerry did and pull off Ohio, we'll have a Hussein the White House . . . . . it will give encouragement that even Zach Wamp can overcome his name someday.

pre-emptive blame

What a brilliant twist on the blame-Clinton strategy! Chad calls Senator Obama "Barack Hussein" and then warns us to expect the same from Senator Clinton. You can see that Chad has really internalized the no-class, no-account Rove approach.

It's so great to live in an era when we have no real problems to worry about and can elect our leaders based entirely on name recognition and whether they seem like a regular joe, albeit a regular joe who can yammer non-stop for 2 years without ever straying from prechewed party-line platitudes.

Hey, I've got a great idea! Let's elect someone who is electable! Maybe if the Dems elect someone they think the Repubs will tolerate and the Repubs elect someone they think the Dems can tolerate we can implode the entire universe in a grand matter-antimatter nullification, thereby saving Grover Norquist the trouble of turning Congress into a whore and drowning her in a bathtub.

It's not beneath me to admit it when I err--I had honestly forgotten that! I don't apologize for being hypersensitive about how those in the GOP mainstream have interchanged Obama and Osama and worse, but I hope I mis-read CBT and would like to give him the benefit of doubt on that.
