This via a TVUUC mailing:

There are already more than 200 emergency anti-war rallies planned (around the US) and it's really important to turn out in big numbers to get our message across. There is one right near you in Knoxville. Can you make it tomorrow?

Here are the details:
Corner of Kingston Pike and Morrell Rd.

Just out of curiosity, why

Just out of curiosity, why do they locate out west versus closer to town, maybe even around campus?

west town as site

bizgirl asked: "Just out of curiosity, why do they locate out west versus closer to town, maybe even around campus?"

there have been discussions for years about the site for anti-war protests/rallies. personally, i would have preferred the john duncan federal building for this one. in fact, protests have been held at the federal building, at the corner of cumberland and henley, on the downtown waterfront, on the plaza outside the UT student center, on kingston pike at concord, at the oak ridge peace bell, at the oak ridge nuclear plant, etc. i don't know how the decision was made on this one, but it amazes me that new people continue to step up to organize these events.

anyone who has never stood (as a pedestrian) on the corner of kingston pike and morrell drive should try it. the reactions of drivers are always interesting and sometimes surprising.

I wonder how often does one see a pedestrian out there who isn't a protester?

Near TVUUC

It's also near the TVUUC - a bit west of it. I can't be there because I still live in Michigan for three more weeks. But I'll be there in spirit! We plan on joining up with the TVUUC after we move to Maryville.

I also prefer downtown locations

They seem to represent the whole city more. A West location seems more like a neighborhood thing. Maybe it's because no one from the downtown volunteered to help whatever organization was putting this together? Next time, if solicitated, I'll offer to be a point person for a downtown protest. I can't go. I have other obligations.
