Knoxville-itis is a particularly stubborn strain of complacency, characterized by prompt demonization of anyone who challenges the accepted way of thinking about or doing things.  I believe its roots lie in the fundamental insecurity of our populace, and that it's fostered by TPTB in the local GOP/GOB power structure who like it better when the masses stay insular -- because then they're more easily manipulated.  (I also believe lots of places suffer from insularity and complacency, and I've lived long enough in enough different places to make an informed judgment about that.)

But it's also a somewhat selective phenomenon.  Consider the two men, not only not from around here but ethnically "diverse" to boot, who rode into town last year seeking to inject new life and thoughts into our area: Ex-Fire Chief Carlos Perez and UT Men's Basketball Coach Bruce Pearl.

Both arrived with records of success elsewhere.  Both challenged existing structures to improve.  Both essentially demanded more -- more thought, more effort, more commitment -- from those who would work with them.  But today, one is a hero soon to get his salary roughly doubled, and the other has accepted a structured settlement of his employment.

Take as a given that this analogy is imperfect, but ask yourself: why the divergent results?  Is it strictly a matter of personalities, and Pearl's has proven more embraceable?  Is it that Pearl met less entrenched resistance than Perez?  Is it that Pearl had a boss who had his back, while Perez did not?  Is it that Pearl charmed the media, while Perez did not?  Is Pearl simply better at what he does?  All of the above?  Something else?

I won't pretend to fully understand this divergence, or these two situations, or to have any or all of the answers to the questions I just posed.  I hope some commenters will have some insights.  But I am always a bit dismayed whenever one of these  -- as R. Neal so aptly put it -- "You're-Not-From-Around-Here-
Are-You-Guy-Leaving-To-Spend-More-Time-With-His-Family
" episodes culminates and most people shrug and say, "Well, he wasn't one of us."

Forgive me if, today, I'm not especially proud to be one of us.

Outstanding essay, great

Outstanding essay, great questions.

One tiem I was talking to this guy I know about the "not from around here" mindset one time. In talking, we discovered that we had both moved away and moved back, and talked about how it gives you a different perspective that can be a little frustrating at times.

This guy said there should be a club, or maybe a support group (don't remember exactly how he put it) for "re-patriates". It might be beneficial for the "not from around here" folks, too. Heh.

P.S. Wait 'till Pearl has

P.S. Wait 'till Pearl has long losing streak, or heaven forbid a losing season. You can go from hero to goat pretty fast around here.

Knoxville-itis, Perez and Pearl

With Coach Pearl, you can see if challenging of old ways is working.  The team plays better or worse than last year.

Then you have Perez.  All you can look at is bottom line numbers and feedback from those close to the situation.

Did Pearl's team have the same complaints that the Fire Department did?  I know both of these folks, and like them both.  But Perez ain't no Coach Pearl...and I know that wasn't your point.  I'm just open to the thought that Perez really didn't work out and do the job that we had hoped he would do.

I canot claim to "know"

I canot claim to "know" Pearl and Perez -- although I have met them both -- but I think I understand their positions well enough to know there is a crucial difference:

Pearl, who, like Perez, has had a long, bumpy and ultimately distinguished career, has accumulated his share of detractors along the way -- just check out any Big 11 or Fighting Illini messageboard to verify this. They HATE him up there and consider him lower than pond scum.
He got off to a rugged start here when Tyler Smith de-committed and current players got in legal trouble and Jemere Hendrix was dismissed from the team. There was a stretch when he was refusing to talk to the media.
What if local media had started "digging" into his past, ferreting out his enemies, looking for smoking bombs to throw? What if members of Pearl's staff were doing opposition research on Pearl and feeding it to a local TV station?
And what if, in the ensuing feeding frenzy, the media had gone to Mike Hamilton and asked him if he supported his new hire?
And what if Hamilton never would say "This is my guy, and I'm standing by him"? What if Hamilton had equivocated, and in fact told people, off the record, that Pearl wasn't going to be around much longer?
Only then would Pearl be in a similar position as Perez.
