This is one of my new favorite bourbons. It's right in the narrow price range between Wild Turkey 101 and Maker's Mark and I like it better than both.

Based on the Wikipedia entry, it doesn't look like Elijah Craig bourbon is really related to the Baptist preacher who invented bourbon, but it's nice of them to honor the good Reverend with such a fine whiskey.

This past weekend, I bought some Fitzgerald's 1849 on the recommendation of a friend. Got it at McScrooge's on sale for $14.99. Pretty good sipping, I must say.

And the price is right.

Four Roses

Can you get Four Roses bourbon in Knoxville? You can get it in Kentucky and it's about the smoothest bourbon I've ever had. I couldn't get it in Illinois.

I dig Bulleit too. I can recall when you could get liter here for about $25. Now, seems it's increaslingly popular.

And, in Texas of all places, I ordered a bourbon and coke. Bartender says: Jack OK? I cringe and say that jack is TN whiskey, not bourbon. Egad.

KY vs. TN

Besides location, what is different about TN whiskey and KY bourbon whiskey? I know that bourbon means Bourbon County, KY but I also know there's a slightly different process for TN whiskey - sour mash?

Personally, I can't stand Jack Daniels, but Gentleman Jack's is decent.

Per the Kentucky Distillers

Per the Kentucky Distillers Association:

Continuous stills, sometimes 50 feet tall and four feet in diameter, are used to heat the mash and gather the vapor. The vapor cools as it travels through the still and is reconverted into a liquid, known in distilling circles as "low wine" or "distiller's beer," containing from 45 to 65 percent alcohol (or 90 to 130 proof).

Most distillers use a doubler still, resembling a large pot, to further refine the low wine into high wine, a clear liquid, ready for aging.

High wine contains from 50 to 57.5 percent alcohol (100 to 115 proof), depending on the final product desired. However, the higher the proof of a bourbon, the lower the amount of flavoring elements it contains.

Tennessee whiskey distillers add an extra step to the distilling process, filtering the high wine through a multiple-layered maple charcoal filter before aging.

Bourbon must be made with a minimum of 51 percent corn and be aged in new white oak barrels charred on the inside. Aging must take place for a minimum of two years (a rarity - most bourbons are aged from four to eight years). If aged less than four years, labeling must include age.

Bulleit runs a little hot, but you should know you are drinking liquor.

If you like the sizzle, go for Knob Creek. It's 100 proof, but the astringent feel of the alcohol is well-balanced with the round flavor.

Knob Creek? Well lets just move up to Baker's and Booker's as well since we are upping the ante. You can strip paint with that stuff, but damn, it's tasty.

Best Bourbon selection in Knoxville/Maryville?

Since I'll be moving to Maryville in early June, what liquor store has the best selection of bourbon - in Maryville especially but also Knoxville?

R. Neal's picture

There are only three (right

There are only three (right now) and they are all about the same. The one on 411 S. (Wine and Spirits Cellar) probably has the best selection, Foothills would be a close second.

They both have pretty good wine selections, with Foothills maybe having an edge there.

In Knoxville, it's probably McScrooges in Cedar Bluff or Bob's off Kingston Pike near West Town.

Near Sam Houston ES

We bought a house near Sam Houston Elementary School right near the Greenbelt and Sandy Springs Park. Foothills and Cellar are both nearby.
