From WBIR:

An emergency event has occurred at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge.

BWXT Y-12 and the National Nuclear Security Administration categorized the event as an "operational emergency" at 9:36 this morning.

According to Bill Wilburn, Y-12 spokesman, the emergency declaration was the result of a small uranium chip fire in building 9204-2E, known as Beta-2.

"Some guys were moving some chips from one container to another," says Wilburn. "In the process, the chips may have been exposed to air. There are no injuries, and no damage to the building."

Wilburn says the fire was extinguished quickly.

The building was evacuated as a precaution, and crews are assessing the area for contamination. He says they are unsure when employees will be allowed to return to work in the building.
