I wanted to like Studio 60, and a couple of episodes I saw were pretty good. But lately I've been wondering why it is again that I'm supposed to care about these characters?
Friday Night Lights, on the other hand, is great TV. It's just like American Dreams, except it's present day instead of the sixties, small-town Texas instead of Philadelphia, and centers around football instead of American Bandstand. (But it's not really about football, and don't let the cheesy website fool you.) The writing, characters, and acting are all top-notch.
If you haven't seen it, check it out if you're interested in that sort of thing. It's on NBC Wednesdays, at 8PM. (At least for now. They keep moving it around.)

Heros?
I feel guilty about liking any TV show, but I am having fun watching Heros. Never liked comic books, but the writing on this show is good enough to keep my attention and is mostly unpredictable.
I have not given up yet on Studio 60 but I hear what you are saying. The more they "develop" the characters, the less I care for them. The concept is good and there are some hilarious moments (from this last episode, having to send the fox after the ferret that was after the snake...) . And it has some of my favorite actors from West Wing, which I miss terribly.
Will have to check out Friday Night Lights. Always enjoyed American Dreams.
Escapism has become necessary with so much volitile politics locally and nationally.

"Heroes" is very good (at least the first three episodes I've watched), "Friday Night Lights" is getting rave reviews, and "The Office" is, of course, fantastic.
What's in the water at NBC? The network is actually producing shows worth watching. I'm sure it's just an anomaly, and things will return to normal in due time.
HBO fans?
I don't watch much TV but I admit it, I'm hooked on the HBO series Rome. It is a bit dark but the scary part for me is the political plot. It's not THAT different from Knox county........
Gotta agree with
Gotta agree with Lotta...Rome kicks arse...and Deadwood as well. Too damn bad they are both being canceled after this season. HBO should have canceled the Sopranos years ago and kept Rome/Deadwood for another season or two.
PBS is presently airing
PBS is presently airing Billy Strayhorn: Lush Life
Strayhorn was one of America's greatest composers yet he remained in the shadow of Duke Ellington.

We dropped HBO when they
We dropped HBO when they canceled Carnivale and Sex and the City climaxed (sorry, I couldn't resist). I liked Deadwood but it seemed forever between the seasons and not enough reason to keep HBO. Could not get into Rome. Angels in America was great. They can all be found on DVD now, so who needs HBO?
I was really disappointed in
I was really disappointed in the last season of The Sopranos. Just as with one of my old favorites, Northern Exposure, it was easy to spot when it was time for them to go. I subscribed to Showtime for the first season of Queer as Folk but soon found that it's better to just buy the DVD's.

I'm ashamed to admit this but ..... I just bought a DVD player. It's not that I'm a luddite....I just never did get around to it and I figured hey, with HBO who needs a DVD player? :-)
I will have to give Heros
I will have to give Heros another try. I watched an early episode and liked it, but for some reason I've been less interested in sci-fi/fantasy in my old age, maybe because the Mrs. has lost all interest in it and we like to agree and stuff.
And I agree about NBC. They've consistently had the best programming over the past few years. I was noticing on the Tivo/Moxi that most of the stuff setup to record is on NBC, with the Keith Olbermann, Daily Show and the Colbert Report filling out the roster.
(I haven't had time to watch it all, and when The Sopranos and Entourage start up again on HBO I'll be even farther behind.)
And I really miss West Wing, too. But I think that and probably American Dreams were examples of shows that were just so good it's impossible to keep up that level of writing and production forever, so best to know when to hang it up and go out winners. Same thing with The Sopranos.
Yeah, I wanted to like
Yeah, I wanted to like Studio 60 too, and I'm still watching it but I'm about to give up. Some of the characters are great (I love D.L. Hughley in it), and some of it's hilarious (like the episode involving Pahrump, NV.) but it just doesn't quite hve its act together.
P.S. That was a coyote, not a fox. Named Yote.
Must-see TV for me...
consists of Battlestar Galactica on Sci-Fi, Lost (if they ever get the new season going), the CSI's, and Ugly Betty. After that, the TV is pretty much just background noise for when I'm on the computer. Although I will admit I really like Veronica Mars (even tho Mallard Fillmore is a fan I can forgive her, he's just a drunken conservative lame duck).

I didn't realize that Rome
I didn't realize that Rome was back with a new season and now I'm 4 episodes behind. Dammit!
I really like Studio 60. Some people are expecting some characters to be more likeable based on their past characters. Matthew Perry's character is funny but some parts of his personality, particularly in his relationship with Harriet are just plain ugly. I just hope they don't cancel it before it hits its stride.
I'm enjoying Heroes. And yes, Battlestar Galactica is the best show in TV. That and the two Stargate shows are awesome. I just wish Sci-fi had a HD channel.
