Been doing my taxes. I hate it. Going on three hours now. Then it occurred to me. Since the .gov has such broad authority despite my right to abortion err privacy to poke around willy nilly in my financial dealings, my various financial institutions are obligated by law to report when I do something out of the ordinary, and all my wage info is sent automatically to the .gov via payroll providers, why don't they just go ahead and do my taxes for me?

Seriously. Hell, if my privacy can be violated like that, why not get some benefit from it?

That's an excellent point.

No, but I don't trust them

No, but I don't trust them now. At least give 1/2 day back per year.

Yeah, but it's not as crazy as it sounds at first. In fact, as part of his platform I think Wes Clark recommended something like that for most taxpayers who file a simple 1040 with no itemizing. If you think about it, why should somebody with a W2 and maybe a few 1099s, which the .gov already has copies of, have to fill out yet another form they got from the .gov and attach copies of the forms the .gov already has to tell them what they already know? I think you're on to something.

True. Or we could get the .gov out of the snooping in our finances business. My preference would be to get rid of the payroll withdrawal system. Let everyone get their full wages and send a monthly/quarterly/yearly check to their friendly neighborhood IRS office.

"Fair tax?" Oh no, now Byron Looper's going to have to change his middle name again...
