Mike Liddell at the DSCC e-mailed regarding a recent post here suggesting that the DSCC and Sen. Chuck Schumer had abandoned Harold Ford Jr.'s campaign down the stretch. Left Wing Cracker had noticed an article by Bob Novakula making this assertion.
The DSCC responds:
Just to let you know, the idea that the DSCC abandoned Harold Ford Jr. is simply not true. Novak got it wrong in his latest column. We were up on the air running ads right up to Election Day. In the last two weeks of the campaign we easily spent over a $1 million - about a fifth of the $5 million we spent throughout the race. I've included the money we spent through our Independent Expenditure for those last two weeks below.Perhaps most telling though is what Ford himself said - in an interview on the Situation Room on Nov. 16th Ford said "Chuck Schumer did an extraordinary job for me." Those aren't the words of a candidate that feels abandoned.
At any rate, there's simply no evidence to back up Novak's BS claim that Schumer abandoned Ford.

senate race
I don't think Kurita would have generated near the excitement and money. Where people get she is progressive I don't know- she was against the state income tax, pro-gun, anti-gay etc. Stacey
Stacey, I've wondered the
Stacey, I've wondered the same thing about Kurita. She's an NRA favorite, and was pretty far right on most issues. Additionally, my sources tell me she's a ferocious fundraiser who is infamous for not even giving non-contributing constituents the time of day. I think her mythical "progressiveness" was just a pipe dream of those who disliked Ford for being too conservative. She would not have done nearly as well in the general election as Ford did, IMO.
She's probably one of the
She's probably one of the few reasons that Tennessee didn't have an amendment on the ballot to outlaw abortion in all instances, much like the South Dakota proposal.

At the very least Kurita
At the very least Kurita would've given Democrats something to show up to vote for in August. That's exactly the short-sightedness that frustrates me about the DC establishment and one of the many reasons why I like Howard Dean.
Here's my take..
She never attacked Democrats or Democratic ideals when she campaigned as Ford did. She might well have been conservative, but she always campaigned as a Democrat, and Ford never did.
This race was all about Ford, not the Party, and those of us in Shelby County just got tired of it.
Respectfully?
No, it wasn't. In great measure it was about wresting control of the Senate from the worst gang of backwards ideologues ever to draw breath, and I don't think those of us who did our part trying to take it back should be chastised for supporting the only Democratic nominee we had. Furthermore, new darling of the left Steve Cohen needs to learn how to play nice with other Democrats or he's going to find himself a short-termer.
Sure, things were handled terrifically badly with Kurita - since I supported her in the primary I could literally write you a list - and the state Party badly needs reform.
I can say this because I'm one of the people working pretty hard to get that reform. I'm not going to post a laundry list of ideas because this is a public forum filled with various agendas, but feel free to email me if you'd like to discuss this.

Who is chastizing you, Eleanor?
For our part, both Cracker and I laid off of Ford as soon as the primaries were over, and we did our best to encourage our Memphis compatriots to follow suit. We did this specifically out of consideration for people like you, Eleanor, and the thousands of other Tennessee Democrats like you who busted your asses to get Ford elected. Like Rook pointed out on Kos, your efforts paid off in the form of RNC spending on behalf of Corker, which in turn helped us win races in MO and VA.
And please, get your dinner fork out of Cohen's back, the man hasn't even been sworn in yet.
Hm. Not that I want to turn
Hm. Not that I want to turn this into a full-on war (mostly because I try to keep a do-no-harm philosophy concerning liberals...even if I think we have a ghost of a chance of getting one elected statewide for a while), but I can easily find a few quotes on Kos in the weeks before the election where you personally slammed Ford pretty hard. I won't cut and paste them unless you insist on pushing this issue, but I think you might want to be careful how you're claiming to have conducted yourself.
I do see where you're coming from with this; you guys have to deal with Ford family shenanigans, and I can understand your being pissed off about it. I'm quite sure there are some nuances here that aren't immediately apparent to those of us in other parts of the state. I think your motivations are good - I'm not about to go after you for sticking up for the Democratic Party, for example - but I believe reasonable people can disagree on this issue. I think there's a time to sit down and keep your concerns to yourself when there's a (much) bigger picture at stake, and taking back the U.S. Senate was it. Giving hell to the state Dem leadership over its treatment of Kurita would have been a good option too, and I hope you're prepared to undertake similar behavior in the future, as I am.
As I mentioned earlier, I think there are a lot of reforms needed in the Democratic Party in this state, and I'm not going to go into specifics because there are members of the media and of state Republican leadership reading this blog. Which is a shame, because I'm sure we could have a great conversation about it, and maybe we ought to do that via email.
As far as Cohen goes, I continue to believe he should not have aired his grievances with Rep. Ford in the media. I can understand the dynamics of his competition with Jake Ford, but I think his supporters should realize that those machinations aren't obvious to people outside Memphis. The vehemence of Cohen's supporters (and their seeming revelry in Ford's defeat) make his motives appear questionable.
I hardly think my limited criticism of Rep.-Elect Cohen qualifies as your "fork." It pales in comparison to the public criticism he made of Rep. Ford, who - may I repeat - was the only Democratic Senate candidate Tennessee was going to get, and it may have contributed to Ford's downfall. Some may believe that leading a flawed nominee to defeat is some kind of ethical victory, but when said defeat helps contribute to the continued success of the folks who brought us the Iraq war and cynical initiatives like the "Healthy Skies Act"...well, I think there's just no contest, morally speaking. This is before we consider what a Ford Senate term may have done to integrate the state Democratic infrastructure, and to decenter Gov. Bredesen's power base, which some folks would assert has developed too strong a gravitational pull on Tennessee Democratic affairs.
It occurs to me y'all may have some reasons to herald Cohen's victory that aren't apparent to those of us in other regions, as well. Celebration over the undoing of the Ford family? Hope for more prominence statewide for Memphis politicos? I can only speculate. For my part, I do sincerely hope Rep. Cohen doesn't give us any more reasons to go after one another, when for Pete's sake we ought to be working together to defeat the Republicans who'd dearly love to legislate us into oblivion. Best case scenario, may he inspire the hundreds of thousands of blue voters in Memphis to help win some hearts and minds in the rest of the state, because heaven knows we could use it.

I was hoping Corker might turn moderate as some said he was, but he sounded to the right of Bush in the first interview. Stacey
