JProf Jim Stovall, now at the UT School of Journalism, is quoted on the front page of the New York Times. It's not exactly about journalism though. It's related to his hobby.
As I was reading the first couple of paragraphs, I wondered if JProf knew about this guy getting sued by the University of Alabama for infringing on their trademark red and white uniforms in his sports paintings. Then in the the next paragraph was a quote from JProf. Cool. (And what a stupid lawsuit.)

You nailed it
METULJ, you nailed it.
That's exactly what universities are doing. Rather than sticking to their original knitting -- advancement of knowledge, promoting free inquiry and expression -- they have decided to act like Big Oil. They justify many of their current actions as "protecting our brand."
One interesting tidbit that came from the conversation I had with the New York Times reporter on this subject (yes, it was me): He asked if I knew anyone in Alabama who agreed with the University's position. (I didn't.) He had been having trouble finding anyone who would stand up for the University on this issue.
Apparently, according to his story, not even the University's spokespeople would do that.
Thanks for the comment.

uniforms
Protecting the brand from what? From alumni? From taxpayers who fund the brand in the first place?
What these lawyers really need to do is redesign the uniforms so they are covered with trademarked logos from any and all perspectives. The basic problem here is that Alabama has numbers on its helmets instead of a trademark, and Notre Dame has nothing on the helmet at all! That sort of spartan design scheme plays right in to the hands of artists like Mr. Moore.

There's the ticket . . . . NASCAR uniforms!
