She's kinda cute in real
She's kinda cute in real life. Sounds a little vapid, though. Bill Hobs said the ad isn't racist because it came out that she has some Mexican heritage. ?
Baby got heritage. But very
Baby got heritage. But very little sense.
BHo's contention is incredibly stupid. "Mexican" is not a racial designation any more than "American" is. BTW, it's always stuck me weird that we citizens of the United States of America really have no name. United Statesians? Residents of the southern part of our hemisphere call us Norte Americanos, which is more specific, although that doesn't really distinguish us from Canadians.
There is a story on this
There is a story on this girl in the Tennessean. Same stuff, but they also interviewed the African-American girl in the ad. She said she didn't see anything racist in the ad. Of course, I didn't until a Ford supporter explained it to me. I just thought of her as a girl playing someone who met Junior at a Playboy party, not a white girl propositioning a black man, in the racist South, etc., etc.
How likely is the African
How likely is the African American woman in the ad (I believe she is an adult, not a "girl,") to admit that she had a part in a racist ad? I doubt she is real anxious to put the ad that is credited for derailing the chances of someone who could have been the first African American US Senator from a Southern state on her resume.
"(I believe she is an adult,
"(I believe she is an adult, not a "girl,")"
I didn't realize "girl" was offensive. My wife prefers it. Makes her feel younger I guess. I hate picky crap like this.
It amazes me how Ford supporters just can't believe a lot of people saw that ad and saw nothing racist. Tacky? Cheap shot? Yes. But, just because it was a white girl they didn't see it as racist.
In the end, Ford was done in by things he could nothing about. His family, his voting record and his experience in life. I believe more Tennesseans wanted an older man who had built a company, had a record of public service and raised a family.
And Sven, other than a few posts on this blog, you don't know a damn thing about me. I didn't grow up in fairy land. Far from it. With a lot of hard work, life is pretty good now. Not easy, but pretty good. I will say with busy jobs and 3 dogs running around, we have our share of crap, both literally and figuratively.

Anecdotal observation not always representative

Okay, here is your official 21st century wake-up call: "girl" is offensive to adult females, generally speaking. When was the last time you were respectfully called... "boy"?
Ain't no "girl"
Huzzah to you and the Beanster for calling Chad on his use of "girl." Ticks me off to no end being a grown-up damn woman and being called "girl."
Bottom line
Corker is going to be a mediocre backbench Senator in a minority party.
Ford is going on to bigger and better things.
And the woman in the ad -- hopefully her 15 minutes of fame are now over.
I didn't realize "girl" was
I didn't realize "girl" was offensive. My wife prefers it.
I bet the female judges you argue in front of prefer it too. And your fellow attorneys who are women.
I don't think the ad is racist; it's just designed to provoke existing racist sentiments in viewers, possibly a distinction without difference. It is sexist. Of course, Playboy is sexist to start with.
Rikki, Female judges prefer
Rikki,
Female judges prefer to be called "Your Honor". I treat female lawyers the same as males, generally speaking. But, in a casual reference to an actress in a TV commercial, particularly a Playboy bimbo, I don't think it's offensive. But, maybe some do. So be it.
It's amazing to me that so many Ford supporters don't get why Corker having a family is a big thing. It's not an obssession for me. It's not the primary reason I voted for him. But, it is important to a lot of voters. For one, a large segment of voters will identify with him. It is also tangible life experience (despite whatever comment you might wish to make about his daughters). If you'll note some of the comments in the paper of people who voted Corker, they mentioned that he's a family man. Ford's family worked against him. Corker's for him.
How do you account for the
How do you account for the fact that more of the people who know the Corkers best -- voters in the city of Chattanooga -- voted for Ford? Sounds like a statement to me.

"How do you account for the fact that more of the people who know the Corkers best -- voters in the city of Chattanooga -- voted for Ford? Sounds like a statement to me."
Corker won Hamilton County. A lot of those folks know Corker well. I believe the city of Chattanooga, like Knoxville, has been trending Democrat. Chattanooga also has a large minority population which was energized by the Ford campaign. That is also true statewide. While there may have been a some number of people who voted against Ford based on race, it is also true that the Ford campaign (to it's credit) likely energized large numbers of voters who may not usually vote and/or voted in favor of Ford because of race. Much of all this is supposition, because hard numbers of votes based on race would be impossible to find. Although, I wonder if there could be any study done on the number of voters who voted in this election and had not in, say, 2002? Of course, you still have to guess at the motivation, without interviews.
I've heard Lincoln Davis' name mentioned. If Lincoln Davis had been the Democrat candidate, would we have seen the record voter turnout in urban areas? Not just minority voters, but all voters in urban areas. Would those voters have been motivated by the rural, country speaking Davis? Who knows, maybe some would have voted for Corker.
In response to Susan Williams comment yesterday (Inside Tennessee) that rural West Tennessee Democrats apparently voted for Corker, Ford supporter Don Bosch immediately said (paraphrase) 'well then, race was the reason'. That seems to be the attitude of many Ford supporters. I happen to think that many of these voters sized up the candidates and decided that Corker better represented those voters interests. The same as when these voters also voted for George W. Bush and not Al Gore. They have heard about the Ford family for a long time out in West Tennessee and it may be they weren't prepared to elect Junior to the Senate.
Race played some role in these campaigns. I don't think you can ever have a complete answer as to exactly how it affected the outcome.
Rural West Tennessee Supported Bredesen Big, But Not Ford
The rural counties in West Tennessee were prime stomping grounds for Bredesen, however, for a number of reasons they did not support Ford. Traditionally, these areas have been much more conservative than the 9th congressional district which has housed the Fords for 30 years. The rural West also subsribes to Memphis print and television media, such perhaps more than any other area, they know the Ford mechanics of operation and have daily insight in to the accusations and insinuations of the Ford political operation. If race was a factor, race was a factor, such that voters more familiar with the Ford family made the call, while voting for a Democrat for the Governor's office and returning their Democratic Congressman to Capitol Hill.
Jr. would make a great Chairman of the Democratic Party, assuming he could push Howard Dean off the stage, but Dean will be supported by the incoming Democratic House and Senate leadership, not the conservative underlyings like Junior.
Corker got 61 percent of the
Corker got 61 percent of the white, male vote, and he evidently got it where you'd expect him to have gotten it -- mostly in the rural counties. Ford won all four of the major cities by an impresive margin, which was still not enough to offset the Bubba factor.
No doubt his last name hurt him, and I don't doubt his race hurt him -- this is Tennessee, folks. I had a freaking Klansman come to visit when I worked at Metro Pulse. We had a cross burning in Knox County in the mid-'90s. Perhaps the wonder is that HFJ made it so close.

"Perhaps the wonder is that
"Perhaps the wonder is that HFJ made it so close."
It's no wonder. Look at all the other seats Democrats claimed on election day.
There were only 2 contested
There were only 2 contested Senate races in the states of the former Confederacy, Chad. VA could easily have swung the other direction.
It's testament to the "firewall strategy" that Rove & Mehlman were able to shuttle that deerhead-stuffing knuckle-dragger Allen anywhere close to the finish line.
If this was a different third of the Senate that was up this time, and more Senate seats were at stake below the Mason-Dixon, I suspect that the Old South would have been able to hold the Senate majority.
Example: Here's the Southern slate up in 2008...
Lamar Alexander of Tennessee
Saxby Chambliss of Georgia
John Cornyn of Texas
Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina
Lindsey Graham of South Carolina
Mitch McConnell of Kentucky
Jeff Sessions of Alabama
John Warner of Virginia
Call me cynical, but if it was those 8 in 2006, you'd be looking at a solid Senate majority this time around.

Given the outcome last week, a definite possibility. Two years isn't a long time. I suspect these 8 know if they want to win in 2008, they better listen up and make a lot of visits home. Might also be interesting to see if any decide to retire.
Lamar
Well obviously Alexnder is retirement age. And he'd probably like to kick back and enjoy the mountains.
But you can bet the Rs will be pressuring him to stay.
Because I do believe Ford would have a good shot at that seat. Especially if he got married. CBT is right about that.

I sure wish I lived in your mind.

You're right, CBT. I don't know anything about you other than the stupid things you say here. But now that I know about your wonderful dogs, I guess I'll have to cut you some slack.

But now that I know about your wonderful dogs, I guess I'll have to cut you some slack.
Not that I'm a one-issue voter or anything, but I must admit I was somewhat taken aback when Harold Ford shamelessly admitted to the world that he had no dog. Chad has his obsession with a candidate "raising a family"; I believe a candidate from the South should have at least one dog and one magnolia tree. I voted for him anyway 'cause I perceived Corker to be a Fristian wanker.

Mind reader -- NOT!!
Ok, I admit to having no skills as a mind reader so, please do not bother to remind me of that or accuse me of trying to claim such skillz.
Simply because someone grasping for a reason to not vote for a non-white individual verbalizes that it was their marital/parental status doesn't mean race is not the real reason. Even if the person doing the verbalizing doesn't admit it to themselves, race can still be the reason. One might question as to whether the spouse/children litmus test was applied across the board. Did Corker voters also choose Burchett? If so, why is his singleness not an issue? Is two the only acceptable number of children or is there a range and, if so, what is the upper limit? Must wives be attractive or would an obese and homely woman bring the same results?
Yea, I know, silly questions and the answers mean nothing because IN MY NOT SO HUMBLE OPINION, the seat was won on the strength of two things, racism and Corker's deep pockets (and the amazingly skillful use of said deep pockets at the end of the race so as to deny any equalizing benifits to his opponent. In some ways it was almost like he bought the seat huh?)
Electricity works even if you deny belief in physics. When you throw the switch, your vacuum still sucks. Try this experiment, convince a young child that gravity doesn't work above water then, throw them at a swimming pool and tell them to stay above the water. See what happens. A lot of stuff in the universe does not depend on you beliving it for it to exist as it is. Racism in America still exists even though a lot of white people have little or no experience with it. That ad, or at least that one aspect of it, was manipulated racism pure and simple.
But really, it doesn't mind if you don't believe in it.

Well Poppy Bush got elected. Are you going to blame his 1992 defeat on Babs or do you think it might have been "the economy, stupid"?
Listen, I'm glad you're able to give a good perspective on racism. What I don't get is how you are able to spew so much sizeism and sexism and get away with it.
