During phase two, Claude and Baker streets will be built and connect Langford Avenue and Waterfront Drive, according to a press release. The city said the streets will make it easier and safer for pedestrians to travel from Suttree Landing to other businesses on Sevier Avenue.

I heard they're cutting down a lot of trees for a new development. Maybe the people that live in the neighborhood can walk to the river they can't see anymore.

I noticed something about
I noticed something about south Knoxville and I may be wrong about it, but we don't seem to have a single sculpture south of the river and I'd like to propose an idea for one. The person I'd like to see have a statue had a somewhat shady past but to accomplish what he did from where he came from was somewhat amazing. I would like to see the statue placed into Suttree Landing park. But it's not the only one I'd like to see there but be the first of many prominent Knoxvillians. The person I'd first like to see have a statue there is Cal Johnson, and considering Sultree Landing is the exact location of Knoxville's first horse racetrack, which he owned, it just seems very appropriate. I had heard the track was later used also by the University of Tennessee for their track. I've been watching some very interesting Knoxville History Project videos and I'd never realized before how many interesting people from here or strong ties to Knoxville that have had such influence, not only on Knoxville but the country and the world. This will probably never happen but I thought it might be a good idea to kick around.
Good idea
But I thought you were going to propose a statue of South Knox Bubba. That would also be nice.

Have to look up the other ones.
How about one of the Stanley family with lots of flowers/plants. They've been there through thick and thin.

(in reply to bizgrrl)
I guess I was thinking of making the statues more inline with all of Knox county's history. I could understand leaving McCarthy out. though he did live on Martin Mill Pike, the reason being I was thinking of keeping the statues of people at least 100 years in our past. But I think all of it should be open for debate. But if I'm not mistaken, James white did move to a log cabin in South Knoxville after he moved out of the fort. His son and daughter-in-law are buried in a little cemetery off Hackman street. The cemetery was actually in the backyard of my brothers high school girlfriend's house. Henry Davenport of the Stanley lineage, is one who should definitely have one. When I was about 8 years old I was playing in a little patch of woods that was between Cecil Webb and the creek that ran beside it. It was more between the parking lot and the creek but I remember happening upon a marker that had an old date and the Davenport name on it. I've often wondered what the marker was doing there and if it were still there.
I'd like to see the park as some kind of an outdoor history museum.
Pool!
The South Knoxville pool on John Sevier closed recently and there's no public pool. I say reinstall the pool next to Trailhead. Bubba could be the honorary lifeguard.
Are you meaning the old
(in reply to Treehouse)
Are you meaning the old Giffin pool? If so, I'm all for it. South Knoxville needs a public Pool again. If you think about it, the kids in South knoxville don't have anything kids in other parts of the city or county. Unless they're into bike trails but that's more for adults. No skating rink, no bowling alley, no pool, no movie theater. Basically the kids in South Knoxville has nothing.

Confound them! Now they won't even let kids in the beer Joints. And they no longer have bootleggers to buy their booze from. What are they to do for entertainment? Aha! I totally forgot about their cell phones. At least their fingers are getting excercise while their brains are being melted down into goo.
There was a pool at Giffin? Before my time
(in reply to JaHu)
The one I was thinking about was on John Sevier Highway, past Chapman towards Straw Plains.
Yes, before it was not before my time, there was Putt-Putt, a bowling alley and an ice skating rink. And there are so many more families here now.
Dear Tommy Smith, we need family amenities!
The pool you are referring to
(in reply to Treehouse)
The pool you are referring to I believe was called Chapman Pool. If you are referring to the skating rink next to John Sevier it was a roller skating rink. I don't ever recall an ice skating rink in South Knoxville but I could be wrong. We actually had a par 3 golf course located just behind where the Putt-Putt course. The putt-putt course was eventually built on land that once was the par 3.
There once was a swimming pool built next to the river just down the street from bubba's. That was Giffin (Bucks) pool. That's the one I'd like to see be built back, and instead of calling it Bucks it could be called Bubba's.
Don't remember an ice skating

Don't remember an ice skating rink in South Knoxville either. There was a roller skating rink on Chapman Hwy near Stone R. Now a storage facility.
Remember the par 3 and the putt putt, on the right just before Home Depot.

I don't remember the skating rink close to Stone road. Was it next to Palace lanes. Could it have been in the old Adams building supply store or maybe across the street? I do remember the one that was located where the carwash and Sonic are located now at Lowe's.
Here we go down memory lane.

You are a true blue Democrat.
(in reply to bizgrrl)
You are a true blue Democrat. You admit when you're wrong. You must not have been a bowler or skater? There are some things I remember clearly from childhood. And then there are some things that maybe a dream crept in sometime in my past and altered my memory some. Does that make sense? My grandparents lived in Scott County and I had a re-occuring dream about an area of houses that was right across the street from their home. But after going there later, it was nothing like what I remembered. Everything else was the same, just not that one area. And it was very obvious it had always been like that.

Don't know if I ever bowled as a youth. Only roller skated once. Our family ice skated over at the ice chalet. The one time I roller skated i couldn't believe how heavy the skates were.

(in reply to bizgrrl)
For a while as a youth I ice skated fairly often. Mostly roller skated though. Sure the skates are heavy but dang that ice is hard. My first memory of roller skating was at what is now the Golden Gloves arena at Chilhowee park with my childhood sweetheart.

And speaking of Griffin Pool.
(in reply to Treehouse)
And speaking of Griffin Pool. Anyone remember the gocart track next to it? I think it was closed before I was old enough to drive the carts. There was also a boat launch next to the pool which I think may still be there but in a run down state. I learned recently that it appears that it was the site of a ferry that was used to cross the river before the bridges were built.
There also was what appeared to be a bridge support next to where the gocart track was. Does anyone know the story on it? Was there at one time, a bridge that crossed the river in that location?

(in reply to JaHu)
Only barely remember the go-cart track. I do remember the older kids building go-carts, and later mini-bikes. One kid actually won a very nice camaro (or corvette? don't recall exactly) replica go-cart at the fair. His parents made him sell it after a couple of weeks, if I recall correctly.
Definitely remember the boat launch. And Buck Giffin built a small concrete boat dock next to it for some reason. Spent countless hours fishing there.
Reminds me of a fiction short story, inspired by a real life character from my youth...

Just the first part about my Dad and Gateway and fishing at the boat dock with Mrs. Brown who was a real person and the rest of that part about conversations, worm supply, etc. Except, she lived in a mobile home ("trailer" back then) right next the boat launch in Buck Giffin's trailer park.
Yes, that Gateway Sporting Goods.

(in reply to R. Neal)
My brothers used fish at the entrance of Island Home at the mouth of Baker's Creek.
One day during the middle of winter, one of my brothers and a friend went there to fish. My brother let his friend use his fishing rod, and he had taken our other brothers rod without his knowledge of it. And it was a pretty expensive rod. Well my brother dropped the rod down in the river at a fairly deep section. Remind you this was in the middle of winter. He was so worried that our brother would literally kill him that he stripped down then dove in to retrieved it. I think it took him a couple tries before finding it.
Here are two names that
Here are two names that definitely needs to be added to the Statue list. Neither were born in Knoxville but both died here. They are father and son and the son lived in South Knox County on the Bluff Overlooking Sequaia Hills. They are George Barber and son Charles Barber. George designed Victorian mail order homes that were sold all over the country. Many were built around the Gill Avenue area and other areas around Knoxville. I think for a while Sears and Roebuck sold them out of their catalogues.
Son Charles designed many substantial buildings and Churches around Knoxville. His wife, I believe her name was Blanche but we really just new her as Mrs. Barber, was a teacher at South Knoxville Elementary. My brothers had her as their teacher. Once one of my brothers wasn't paying attention in class and she threw a book clear across the room and beaned him in the head. Believe or not, even though with that happening she was still his favorite teacher during all the years he was in school.
One other person I'd like to mention is as a person of consideration is Polly Bergen.

(in reply to JaHu)
Yes, Mrs. Barber was a 5th grade teacher when I went there. I didn't have her for 5th grade but she had me come in and read to her class from time to time. It was weird. She always drove a new Cadillac, had the best parking spot, and wore fur stoles and fancy pearls. And she was definitely tough. The most feared teacher at the time, and most respected by her peers. I actually thought Suttree Landing Park should have been Barber Park for all the reasons you mentioned. I may have mentioned that to the Mayor, don't recall.
I agree about Suttree
(in reply to R. Neal)
I agree about Suttree Landing. You should've pushed harder for the name.
Do you remember hearing the story of Mrs. Barber falling off the bluff at her house? I think she only received a few bruises and scratches.
I think before marrying Barber she used to teach in a one room school house in Scott County. It's probably what made her so tough.

Wow, don't remember those stories. Doesn't surprise me, though.
One more thing about Mrs.
(in reply to R. Neal)
One more thing about Mrs. Barber and I'll shut up about all of this. I guess everyone is probably getting pretty tired of my posts.
Mrs. Barber had bought some clothes one day and brought them to school to give to my brothers because she thought our family was poor. The reason was, they always came to school dirty. The thing is our family was far from poor. When my brothers left the house in the mornings, they always left in clean clothes. The problem was there were woods between our house and the school and they would always play in the woods on the way to school and would show up at school completely covered in dirt. Needless to say, after our mother found out, she rectified the problem. When telling of these incidences I keep thinking of it happening in the newer school building because that was where I went. But the new school wasn't built until after I was in school so this all had to have happened in the old building of SKE.
Just wanted to add this edit. Although Mrs. Barber may have been fierce, I think this shows, she still had a heart of gold.
Patricia Neal
Does she have a statue?
