Last night we were talking with a neighbor who moved here from Washington (the state) three years ago. We were talking about how he likes it here (he loves it) and some of the differences in culture and so forth.

We got around to voting, and he said "I never thought I'd be standing in a church voting for liquor by the drink."

Today he gets to stand in a church and vote for packaged liquor sales. All of which is amusing if you think about it, but it also highlights how migration to the South is changing our demographics and outlook on things.

From City Behind a Fence

From City Behind a Fence comes this story about the influx of "Carpetbaggers" into Oak Ridge for the war effort.

In the 1945 county liquor referendum, drys stood at the polls and made lengthy challenges to the qualifications of all CEW [Clinton Engineering Works] residents.  On the day before the election, a structural defect was "discovered" in the Edgemoor Bridge on the road to the polling place at Edgemoor School.  The bridge was closed on election day and "repaired" the next day.  The drys won.

A detour around the bridge would have involved many extra miles of travel to get to the polls.

I'm not sure that's a good thing. It's a great place to live for a reason.

In the words of Lewis Grizzard, 'we don't care if you move to the South, just don't tell us the way we do things is wrong. If you don't like it, stay where you are. If you get here and don't like it, Delta is ready when you are.'

Stadium? Wow, did not know that. I always liked Grizzard.

Ya, know. I don't really think he felt this way, and, ya know, Delta is not really as ready as they should be.

I'm a Continental man

I'm a Continental man myself. Anyhow, I would love to hear what Grizzard's take on the last 12 years in American politics would have been. If ever there was a person God-made for blogging it was him. 'Cept he hated computers.
