One of the front page above the fold headlines in today's Knoxville News Sentinel is "Ford's appearance at event criticized."

It's interesting when you get a chance to see an event first hand and then later read the media reports of the same event. You sometimes wonder what event they attended. (Although there is no evidence that the reporter was actually at the event.)

Read more after the jump...

According to the KNS article:

[Tennessee Republican Chairman Bob] Davis said the Duncan barbecue on Tuesday, which Republican U.S. Senate candidate Bob Corker also attended, reminded him of last week's confrontation in a Memphis parking lot, where Ford appeared near a press conference that Corker planned. Ford tried to engage Corker in a debate about the U.S. plans in Iraq while TV camera crews filmed the exchange.

Davis said the Memphis confrontation showed Ford's "lack of maturity." By appearing this week at Duncan's barbecue, Ford showed that his campaign "is struggling and he is desperate for attention," Davis said. He said he heard that a number of people at Duncan's barbecue were "hacked off that he was there."

According to the article, Davis' comments are based on a report he read in the Chattanooga paper, so it's not clear if he was there either.

I was there. In fact, we came in right behind Harold Ford Jr. and Lincoln Davis and their entourage. We followed them down to the arena floor. We spoke briefly with both of them along the way. Harold Ford Jr. was greeted warmly by a number of friends and supporters in the line. He stopped to chat and shake hands. He had his picture taken with two little toddlers who were as cute as they could be.

Once we got to the floor of the coliseum, Ford was mobbed by supporters and well-wishers. He was still there, shaking hands, getting his picture taken, and talking with voters when we left.

The only grumbling we heard was from a few Corker operatives. And by the way, after encountering some of these dudes at various Ford events and at the Duncan event, the contrast between Corker's staff and Ford's is remarkable. Corker seems to have a bunch of scowling, unhappy looking young white guys acting tough. Ford has a diverse crew of polite and attractive young men and women and minorities who show a lot of class and seem to have a lot of fun.

Anyway, the KNS article notes that Jimmy Duncan personally called Harold Ford Jr. to apologize for the way the Tennessee Republican chair criticized Ford for his attendance. Duncan and his spokespeople noted that the event was open to the public and anyone was welcome to attend.

It should also be noted that Gov. Bredesen, Jim Bryson, and Bob Corker were there, and as far as I know none of them live in Duncan's district. I am not aware of any press releases from any Democrats criticizing Bryson or Corker for being there. If anyone is desperate for attention, it's the Tennessee GOP chair. He should apologize to Ford and to the voters of Tennessee.

And the headline for the article should read "Tennessee GOP unfairly criticizes Ford. Again."

Yes, I was quite surprised

Yes, I was quite surprised to see that headline. Especially when the second half of the first sentence said, "but U.S. Rep. John J. Duncan Jr.'s top aide said the general public was invited to Duncan's Knoxville barbecue and he was not upset at Ford's attendance. "

Then the second sentence said, "I think most people know that it's open to the public," said Duncan's chief of staff, Bob Griffitts. "

The KNS is sensationalizing. Are they campaigning for Corker? They headline could have said, "Duncan defends Ford's attendance at barbecue".

I don't subscribe to the

I don't subscribe to the KNS, but I have seen the headline. Their bias reporting is the very reason I don't and won't subscribe to their paper. Both headlines are unfavorable to the Democrats. The first headline "Donation won't help Dem", makes it sound as if the democrats don't have a chance in the election, and the second headline is as you noted, a misleading representation of the event at the barbaque. I don't understand why a Democrat would even subscribe to that trash paper.

Hey bubba, you need to add a classified section in your side menu, That way we won't need the KNS at all.

Davis, Hornback and the like

Davis, Hornback and the like need to reallly get over themselves.  There are plenty of decent Republicans in this state, why they stand for such crappy leaders at the county and state level is beyond me and makes them all look despicable.  If you're a Republican reading this and are disgraced by these idiots who are your supposed leaders, do something about it.  There are plenty of decent Republicans that could easily take their place.

Although telling you to do that could end up being bad for the good guys, so on second thought...please leave them be and dig their own holes for themselves and all of you.

And *Ford* supporters are

And *Ford* supporters are "desperate." Yeah, right. See, here's the thing: We don't have to invent criticisms about the other guy, like ridiculous claims about abortion pills and transgendered Indians. Going after Ford for attending a public event attended by every public official in east TN is just laughable.

Where's Michael Silence when you need him...?

Hang on, this is the second

Hang on, this is the second time in as many weeks that Jr. has popped up at REPUBLICAN gatherings. When asked why he has no answer? Anyone on this board ever see Corker crash a DEMO event?
Jr. needs to stick to his side of the bed and stop trying to act, smell and be a republican. The raging hard LEFT hates that and the middle of the road Republicans can see right through it.

Polls out on Monday will show Jr. headed into the dumper and Corker headed to D.C.

Really none of you have any answer as to why Jr. would show up at a Republican even do you? Didn't think so!!

Wow, you mean ol' Corker

Wow, you mean ol' Corker actually picked up another .0001 of a percentage point?? Stop the presses!!

For the record, Ford was there with Democratic Rep. Lincoln Davis and - oh yeah - the Democratic nominee for Governor that's going to crush his Republican opponent like a june bug under the heel of his Tony Lama. Nice try, but unfortunately for you this one isn't going to hold any water, just like the other "scandals" and "outrages" that are about as scurrilous as Ford's forgetting to bring the napkins to a Sunday picnic. Yawn.

Oh no, the ditto heads are lurking!

Amazing what this election is drawing out of the sewer. Ditto heads!

I agree, as a "former" AIR

I agree, as a "former" AIR AMERICA supporter and listener I find nothing more chilling than those few people still listening to Rush!

As for Ford going to republican functions and Corker not going to dem gatherings, I agree it is a puzzle but if that is were the crowds are then why not go? Rich White Republicans do vote more than working, black, poor Dems and if Ford can get them to come over and vote for him then I guess attending their functions is a very good idea!

Any hope for Air America returning soon? It was the only light we had in that dark sea of right wing radio, MPR can't do it alone!

The Jimmy Duncan Family

The Jimmy Duncan Family Barbecue is not a "Republican event."

Passive-aggression

Heh. Thanks for giving me an idea for Monday's lecture on headline writing. I hope the students don't read my blog first!

Bob Davis' lack of maturity

one more reason I have increasingly gained respect for Duncan over the years.

headline / reporter - reminder

just wanted to parrot what bob stepno points out on his blog
about a reality of reporters and headlines

bob stepno's link ... that reporters don't write their own headlines -- the copy desk editors write them while fitting stories into the space on a page.

I've heard reporters mention this numerous times over this headline issue. (I would think Powelson would have more editorial sway than most if he wanted to assert it, but that's just a guess.)

I thought the headline was completely backward, but I didn't have a big problem with the story itself. It's purpose wasn't to cover the whole event and I thought it covered the open invitation point right up front. I don't see how it could have cast Davis as any more of a lunatic, but that's how it came off after response by Duncan's staff and Michael Powell's revelation kicked in.

And all this because you troublemakers showed Ford how to get to the coliseum. Too bad CNBC didn't follow you to cover this latest scandal.

...Anyone on this board ever

...Anyone on this board ever see Corker crash a DEMO event?

I believe, as usual, a dittohead has it wrong again. Duncan, the host, says all are welcome. Duncan does not have a great divide, nor does Ford. Apparently, Corker has created a great chasm with no ability to lead  a diverse population.
