Candidates would instead be selected by the Tennessee General Assembly. The bill is scheduled for the Senate State and Local Government Committee today and the House Local Government Subcommittee for tomorrow.
This "nutty" idea keeps getting resurrected. It is probably unconstitutional.

The 17th amendment
(in reply to cwg)
The 17th amendment established direct election of U.S. Senators in 1913 after many years of state legislatures appointing wealthy men to their "Millionaire's Club". This proposal in the Tennessee legislature is an attempt to go back to the "good old days" when ordinary people were kept in their place and the elite dominated. The idea fits right in with Trumps Make America Great policies. It will take decades, if ever, to recover from all this BS!
Bill died in Senate
Bill died in Senate subcommittee.
Great! I hope lawmakers will
(in reply to R. Neal)
Great! I hope lawmakers will keep their senses long enough to keep from destroying our state and country. A lot of crazy ideas that used to be too outlandish for even the far right, are now getting stirred up by Trump nut cases.
This has been one of Frank
This has been one of Frank Niceley's pet bills for years. He may be as loony as he seems to be, but he's so dishonest that it's hard to tell.
