The big blue Jr. bus rolled into downtown Knoxville and Harold Ford Jr. gave an inspiring speech to a large, enthusiastic audience. He can work a crowd like an old time gospel preacher. He taps his foot in time to the cadence of his speech, sometimes stomping or marching a step or two. There were plenty of "amens" from the crowd.
I was taking photos instead of notes, but here's a summary from the best of our recollection.
One of his themes was change. Change in direction, change in politics as usual. Balancing the budget, reducing the deficit, standing up to Bush when he's wrong.
On the swift boat ads, he says it's too bad his opponent has to bring in $5 million of outside money to run a negative attack campaign. He says his opponent has no record to defend so all he can do is attack Ford's. Ford said "Shame on you Bob Corker for bringing swift boat politics to Tennessee."
On foreign policy he says we can't fight a global war on terror by ourselves. We need allies. He says Reagan won the cold war without launching a single missile, and it was because the world respected us. He says we have lost that respect over the past six years, and we need to get it back. He says we should never take force off the table as an option, but force should never be our first option.
On education, Congressman Ford noted that China is graduating more scientists and engineers than the U.S., and more English speaking scientists and engineers than we are. He said that if America is no longer competitive 20 years from now society can look back to this election as the turning point when we missed the opportunity prepare our next generation for the future.
He closed with "I am Harold Ford Jr. and I approve this message." And the crowd went wild.

The Man Looks Like A Senator
Got to say, Jr looks good in blue. The man has a command and pressence about him. He looks like a Senator. He looks like a leader. I am proud to be a supporter and share his vision.
Early Voting Opened Today, Get out and VOTE!
Great photo report!
Ford looks like a good candidate. Too bad he doesn't understand the "Tennessee lifestyle."
Brian A.
I'd rather be cycling.
What was that crowd. By
What was that crowd. By pictures I'm guessing around 200? Thats pretty impressive
Actually the crowd was still
Actually the crowd was still pretty spread out when the bus finally arrived (late) and that picture was taken. And the stage had been moved twice. Once everyone figured out where he was it was pretty packed. I didn't do a crowd estimate this time, maybe the Mrs. did but she's not here. But I'd say there were closer to 300 people, maybe more. Weather was a factor, too. Doug McDaniel said in comments on another post that there were about 600 at a prayer breakfast this morning.
UPDATE: The Mrs. says it wasn't as packed as I thought (I was up front, she stayed further back). She guesses around 200.
Good stuff, Bubba.
Good stuff, Bubba. Particularly the shot of Jr. with David Keith in the background. That one took a photog's expertise.
I was at Calhoun's with Ford and will probably be at an event next week... I notice AC's name on the host committee. Interesting...
Can Ford withstand the Swift boaters? Everything they said about Kerry turned out to be a lie but they got their evil way. We'll know in three weeks, but I'm going to do what I can to rid this planet of Swift Boaters. American deserves better than that style of campaign.
Steve

David Keith
David Keith looks like he's just rolled out of bed. Or a bar.
He could've at least tucked his shirt in.

Very nice pictures! Oh
Very nice pictures! Oh man...
This guy does indeed look like good senator material. And in this case, the substance is there. What looks like a Senator will indeed be a good Senator for Tennessee.
