Today, April 12, 2016, is the day when women’s earnings “catch up” to men’s earnings from the previous year.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) promotes Equal Pay Day to draw attention to the gender pay gap and build support for the Paycheck Fairness Act.

Think 79 cents is bad? The pay gap is even worse for women of color. AAUW also observes Asian American Women’s Equal Pay Day in March, African American Women’s Equal Pay Day in August, Native American Women’s Equal Pay Day in September, and Latina Equal Pay Day in October.

President Obama will pay

President Obama will pay homage to women's equality Tuesday, designating the Sewall-Belmont House and Museum, a historic house in the District that has housed the National Woman's Party since 1929, as a national monument.

The site, to be named the Belmont-Paul Women's Equality National Monument, honors both Alva Belmont, the National Woman's Party benefactor, and Alice Paul, who founded the party and served as its chief strategist.

I am partial to Alice Paul;

But both these women are fascinating and heroic.
According to biography.com...even though Belmont worked hard to help women achieve the right to vote, she herself " reportedly refused to vote until a woman candidate was in the running for president. "
She might achieve that dream if she were alive today! Too bad it is taking this long....

One more heroine, Barbara Mikulski, senator and social worker

The longest serving female in the Senate:

Barbara Mikulski, the Maryland Democrat who has served in Congress for nearly 40 years, will retire from her current position as U.S. Senator at the end of her term in 2016. Mikulski, 78, was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1977 before moving to the Senate in 1987. She was the first woman to chair the influential Appropriations Committee, a coveted position given the committee’s oversight over hundreds of billions of dollars of discretionary spending.

"Maybe it's because she's a social worker, maybe because she's a woman - she understands relationships are everything," said Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "She helps you see areas of common interest so you can find solutions."
