Gov. Haslam directed every state agency to cut their budget by 7%. Here's TennCare's response:

$400 million in cuts proposed for TennCare

The proposed budget eliminates grants to safety net hospitals, ends funding for programs for babies born with health problems, halts coverage of hospice services and limits in-home assistance for the elderly to those poor enough to qualify for Supplemental Security Income. Doctors and other health providers would get hit with a 4 percent reimbursement reduction. Other cuts include funding for medicines and mental health services.

The amount includes 2/3 matching federal funds. Hopefully this proposal is just for shock value and such drastic cuts can be avoided. The TNGOP is probably salivating over the prospect, though. Zero steps forward, two steps back.

So what could we have done

So what could we have done the last year or so with $2.1 Billion of Medicaid for people in the state and also that much more money in circulation in the state?

Richard Locker reports - Vanderbilt Poll says Tennesseans favor expanding Medicaid

The poll found that 56 percent of Tennessee registered voters favor Medicaid expansion, a provision of the federal Affordable Care Act in which uninsured residents with incomes between 100 and 137 percent of federal poverty levels can get health insurance. States have the option to expand Medicaid and Haslam has been negotiating with the Obama administration on allowing Tennessee to use the federal money for Medicaid expansion on a more market-based alternative plan.

That same poll showed a 70%+

That same poll showed a 70%+ approval rating for Haslam. Go figure.

I heard on the radio this

I heard on the radio this afternoon that Haslam plans to submit his plan for expanding Medicare to the Feds by the end of the year.

I hope something comes of it, although my expectations aren't high.

And this proposal: cutting out hospice care? Cutting funding for babies born with physical problems?

This is just not the kind of society I want to live in. It's just not.
