It is that time of year. I am proud to say that this is a little bit of my produce from my pesticide free organic garden. It was a good year, but I was unimpressed with my peppers. I am not going to dog Grainger County tomatoes, but anyone that has picked a vine ripened tomato off the plant and immediately ate it like an apple with a salt shaker will tell you it is much better. I used to enjoy canning stuff with my grandparents, but now I loath the activity. It is worth the pain though when you compare it to buying tomatoes in February.

Nice harvest. The squirrels

Nice harvest. The squirrels and rabbits ate most of ours. My Mom had better luck, though. She had already canned a bunch back in June, I think.

I have found that you can

I have found that you can pop those extra tomatoes in the freezer, either quartered or whole, for about 24 hours and then vacuum seal them.  Return them to the freezer and use them this winter in soups and stews.  It beats the heck out of canning.

I tried a tomato growing method this year where you make a hole in the bottom of a bucket, insert the plant, roots-upward, through the hole, and fill with potting soil.  I understand this method was developed by a gentleman from ORNL.

My yield was a bit disappointing, especially considering the ridicule I endured from the neighbors.

"but anyone that has picked a vine ripened tomato off the plant and immediately ate it like an apple with a salt shaker will tell you it is much better."

Even buying a tomato from a local roadside seller and knowing it was grown in the neighborhood doesn't give the taste treat of the just-picked back yard variety.

Oops! Is the use of the term back yard an endorsement for sprawl?  I'm sorry.  My folks only bought this farm back in '48 so Mama's clothesline would escape the soot from the Coster Shops in Lonsdale.

I guess it would be safe to move back now, though.  We haven't had a clothesline here for a couple of years now.
