Some unhappy news this morning. Reports are coming in that Steve Irwin, the 'Crocodile Hunter' was killed while filming a documentary off the coast of Queensland. There's a certain irony in the manner of his death, but the event removes one of the most visible and most popular advocates for conservation in the world. See here:

When asked, I've always told

When asked, I've always told people Steve Irwin was going to get himself killed. Now that he's gone and done it, I'm very saddened. Ever the self promoting showman, Irwin was nonetheless a huge advocate for wildlife.

I mostly feel sorry for his

I mostly feel sorry for his wife and kids. Most people I know who work with wildlife and wilderness consider that sort of death honorable.

I want to know whether his last words were "Crikey! Now I've done it!"

Normalization of risk

Sad but probably inevitable.  When my daughter was little, I cautioned her not to emulate Irwin's behavior - and I'm a guy who has had several close encounters with black bears in the Smokies.  I got to hear, "I know, Daddy," often enough that my message took.

Irwin took chances and got away with it, so it felt normal.  After the infamous incident when he held his infant son while feeding a crocodile, he claimed almost tearfully that he had been in "total control of the situation."

What really happened was that he became unable to distinguish between a 1 in a thousand chance of dying and a 1 in a million chance.  Then he took enough chances that the odds caught up with him.

Liberty and justice for all.

I commented to the family

I commented to the family the night we first saw Crocodile Hunter, "One of these days we're gonna read about this guy."

Sorry, Steve . . . another Candle in the Wind.
