He's 81 and I'll be surprised

He's 81 and I'll be surprised if he can still sing much less hit the note. But I've missed so many chances to see perhaps the greatest country music singer of all time that I'll be happy to just see him walk out on the stage. I only hope it won't be too sad and moreover that it makes him happy to still be doing it, at least one more time.

James Taylor, who wrote Bartender blues, is also a classic. He sang backup for Jones on the song which is the title track of the album of the same name.

I just hope he shows up somber! I remember seeing him in San Diego back in 1968 when I was in the Navy. That was long before he became know as "No Show Jones" due to being drunk. He had some great traditional country songs back when country was country. His type of music would not receive air time now on the radio.

His last concert ever (so he says) will be in Nashville, in November, at Bridgestone Arena. I bought my tickets months ago. Artists are already lining up for what should be a great tribute to one of the greatest ever.

As for his bluesier side, I like "It's Been a Good Year for the Roses", such sad imagery. Jones has performed a wide range over 50+ years. Unlike pop country stars, Jones lived the life of love, addiction, loss, pain, happiness and joy. And, his fans related to him very personally because of it.

George Jones showed up and put on a pretty great show for an 81 year old man. He could still hit the high tenor notes. There were a lot of fans and they loved it.

He had a top-notch band, The Jones Boys with Brittney Allyn, including bonus surprise Billy Contreras (who we last heard downtown with Robinella and the CC String Band years ago) on fiddle.

It was better than I expected and I'm just happy that we finally got to see him at least once.

The Mrs. had to go down front as she usually does, and snapped the above cellphone pic.
