KNS: TVA CEO Kilgore announces retirement

Says he will stay on until a replacement is hired. He leaves TVA in shambles, with massive debt, the Kingston ash spill still not cleaned up or residents made whole nearly four years later, huge cost overruns and mismanagement at the Watts Bar nuclear plant, and repeated violations at the Browns Ferry nuclear plant while continuing to receive giant bonuses. To his credit, though, he has presided over a large scaling back of coal-fired power plants.

Don't forget that nobody at TVA even knows who their boss is anymore since upper management keeps themselves busy redoing the org chart every six months. It was shuffling managers around at the fossil plants that set the stage for the Kingston ash spill.

I think the court rulings and EPA's new rules forced them to shutter coal plants, aided by the economics of cheap nat. gas. And KNS reported that they wouldn't have needed to start two idle coal plants, even during the recent 100+ degree heat spell, we're it not for the crippled Racoon Mountain pumped storage plant, which is clean. I wonder if Bull Run was one of those, which restarted around then for the first time since last fall.

I actually think completing Watts Bar is probably the best thing to do, even though it's part of the nature of nukes to have many cost overruns. I expect we'll learn of more. I just think James Hansen is right about the necessity for a few more nukes. I hope it can be few, though, and only to retire fossil fuel plants quicker.

So, give him a ginormouser bonus to get him to stay?
