We seem to be going the opposite direction ...

When we shrink investments in higher education and research, “we shoot ourselves in both feet,” remarked K.R. Sridhar, founder of Bloom Energy, the Silicon Valley fuel-cell company. “Our people become less skilled, so you are shooting yourself in one foot. And the smartest people from around the world have less reason to come here for the quality education, so you are shooting yourself in the other foot.”

Unfortunately, even to self-publish, you still need to know how to write. The same is happening to research.

Are we dependent on immigrants being the risk takers? Can't U.S. students fill the slots?

“Sixteen of the top 100 best sellers on Kindle today were self-published,”

Can the books be purchased some place other than Amazon? Is Amazon bigger than Walmart? If not, will they be soon?

As usual, when Friedman tries to make the skills mismatch argument he mostly is showing his lack of the skills appropriate for someone writing on economic policy for a major national newspaper.

the success of several of these companies does not necessarily stem from being innovative. For example, most of Amazon's profits have been attributable to its effective lobbyists. They have managed to exempt most of its sales from state and local sales tax in most of the country. This enormous subsidy, at the expense of traditional retailers, has often exceeded its profit margin.
