I stumbled across a few minutes of the Blues Bros. movie on TV, featuring the James Brown church scene with Jake and Elwood where Jake "sees the light."

This is one of the great, probably top-five, American movie musicals of all time. (Other contenders that come immediately to mind are Sound of Music, Moulin Rouge, Woodstock, and Little Whorehouse in Texas.)

Anyway, it reminded me of a couple of retro-pop culture items I had been meaning to get off my desktop for a while.

First is this pretty cool Rolling Stone profile of James Brown. I don't think it fully does him justice in some ways, but it's a fresh take from the younger generation and a good attempt at explaining the James Brown mystique in a backhanded sort of way that even an old geezer like me can appreciate.

Second is this Rolling Stone look back at Led Zeppelin and their enormous influence on the American rock music scene. It's a little superficial, but overall I think it captures the essence of the times and the band.

Finally, for dessert I will direct you to this post at Cup of Joe Powell re. Frank Zappa that features a rather amazing video find of one of Zappa's live performances.

Ah, memories

I once got in a fistfight over whether The Doors were better than Motley Crue. After I called the latter "zit cream for the soul" an entire pack of hairspray headbangers pounced on me. Good times.

My favorite musical is probably Fiddler on the Roof. Despite being the very definition of goy, I identify with Zero Mostel. Ya ha daidle deedle daidle daidle daidle deedle daidle dum. Bork bork bork.

Led Zep.

That was a good article on Led Zepplin. I wish more of the older live stuff would find the light of day.

I never "got" James Brown. Ever. Just never did. I love old blues, old R&B and old Funk, but he just eludes me.

Fiddler on the Roof? I was Mendal, the Rabbi's son in a production in Athens, Georgia in my youth. I still can't get that damn "Anatevka" song out of my head.

Really? That's strange. I mean he practically invented some of that stuff. Plus he was a hell of a singer in his prime. And the way he worked his amazing band was, well, amazing, like arranging on the fly. I'd admit, though, that among his vast body of work maybe only 30% or so appeals to me, with Cold Sweat being at the top of my list as one of the greatest things ever recorded.

Zep, James

I was a huge Zep fan in the '70s and so I remember scouring RS back then for Zep info.  Funny thing is that RS used to ignore Zep or just dis them.  But they pay tribute now that it's easy to see the Zep influence, and now that I'm permanently, totally burned out on Zep and that whole genre.  I have, though, gotten a big kick watching clips of various old favorites at youtube.

I really enjoyed the Godfather of Soul at a Chilhowee Park concert several years ago.

Soul Brother number 1

Soul Brother number 1 sang "Say it Loud...I'm Black & I'm Proud"..In '68 Look Magazine ask..is James Brown "the most important Black Man in America?"...When Martin Luther King.Jr.was shot, there were riots in 110 cities, but not in Boston because James Brown gave a concert that was live on tv...like the brother said it was just a "Thing in G"
