The KNS has some good news on the Bowater land deal:

The state plans to buy 12,550 acres from Bowater Inc. as part of an overall effort to protect scenic lands on the Cumberland Plateau.

The land deal will enable the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation to complete a portion of the Cumberland Trail and develop a corridor between the Bridgestone Wildlife Management Area, Bledsoe State Forest, and Fall Creek Falls State Park.

According to the article, Bowater is also donating 3,000 acres "to help complete the Cumberland Trail through the North Chickamauga Creek Gorge, in north Hamilton County." The article has more details and breaks down the financing.

There's more coming. we

There's more coming. we won't get everything I wanted but we'll get some of it.

Oddly, the Bredesen insiders are reluctant to make a big deal about this because there is a rabid anti-environmentalism ethic in parts of TN. Some groundwork has to be laid. Local politicians complain about the loss of revenue when land goes public but that is amazingly short sighted. Our study shows that the land values next to public land are skyrocketing...more than making up for the perceived loss.
