Booyah! You beat me to it.

Booyah! You beat me to it.

Wish we could have had a primary here in TN. Although a) I don't think the war is a good single issue to run on (how about jobs, health care, destruction of the middle class, etc.), and b) I wish we didn't focus so much national attention on state races and would just let them decide, and let them let those races help build the local party apparatchik.

P.S. MSNBC is talking about Talladega Nights, and CNN was just talking earlier about a Star Wars stage production.

P.P.S. And I already had my headline planned: Joementum fizzles out. I like yours better. Heh. So, will Joe run as an "I" now?

Andy Axel's picture

Even better

How about "Joenertia?"

Good ones.Hey, Fox is

Good ones.

Hey, Fox is covering it! Colmes was at Lamont HQ and actually growing a pair. And spanking Mary Matalin in the process.

Hannity interrupted to say "This marks the night when, officially, the Democratic Party was taken over by extermists."

OK, then.

R. Neal's picture

Larry King just chimed in

Larry King just chimed in with "extraordinary developments in Connecticut", then cut to Candy Crowley at Lieberman HQ saying that more returns are in and now it's even, so it's going to be a long night. Not sure what planet they are reporting from.

Sven's picture

let those races help build

let those races help build the local party apparatchik.

Actually, despite all the hype, I think that's what happened in the Lamont race to a large extent. Reading around before the CT state convention, I learned that Lieberman was taking the town committees for granted. CT hadn't had a competitive Democratic primary for 50 years, and Joe! was counting on a fat campaign coffer, the spoils of office and threat of reprisal to keep everybody in line as usual. He hadn't visited most areas in years.

Lamont busted his hump visiting every precinct in the state, and pried a third of the delegates away through sheer effort. Lieberman was caught completely off guard, because he had no contact with the locals.

That's what blew a hole through the center of Lieberman's campaign, not ranting bloggers and bloviating pundits. The local poo-bahs who hadn't already defected did so when it became clear at the convention that Lamont had a shot. Despite having $12 friggin' million in the bank, Joe's campaign was dead in the water. He never recovered.

Even if Joe manages to somehow pull off a miracle, you can bet he'll have a lot of butt-kissing to do out in the sticks.

R. Neal's picture

I think that's what happened

I think that's what happened in the Lamont race to a large extent.

Agreed. In Connecticut. Not in TN.

Factchecker's picture

Do you really think it's

Do you really think it's that far in the bag?

I hope so, but take nothing for granted.

Eleanor A's picture

Can't imagine

there's much doubt that competitive primaries for Gov or Senate would have brought out more Democrats. Course, this is one of those things that hurts local candidates - like not holding elections for Lt. Gov, state Attorney General, et. al does - and a couple years from now when there aren't many in the pipeline, a bunch of people are going to be scratching their heads. Yet mentioning these issues gets your ass handed to you by the people who run things in our fair state. Sigh.

Sven's picture

Just sayin'. Connecticut

Just sayin'. Connecticut wasn't exactly a likely place for a grassroots insurgency before Lamont started tilting at windmills.

My guess: Joe runs as an independent. He's got way too much money burnin' a hole in his pocket (plus he seems to have a bit of trouble understanding when the cause is lost).

No to imply anything uncouth, but can you imagine what kind of unspeakable acts Joe's had to perform behind closed doors to bring in that kind of change?

R. Neal's picture

Surely nothing worse than

Surely nothing worse than making out with Bush on live national TV? You think?

Sven's picture

Seriously, he must have

Seriously, he must have promised some massive rates of return. Either that or the establishment is scared out of its mind that his loss portends the apocoplyse.

To clarify an earlier comment

Obviously Iraq is an important issue and Democratic candidates need to have a message which reflects reality.

What I was trying to say was that I think events over there are going to have much more weight than what particular candidates say about timetables, redeployments, and what not.

I'd rather be cycling.

I certainly hope you are correct on that. As horrible a failure as Iraq has been, the poisoned well is even deeper than that.

Looks like Hartford is

Even with that 3% margin, Lamont has been pacing Lieberman all night to the tune of +5000 - 8000. He's never been behind.

Guess we'll see how the paid Lieberyouth GOTV effort worked out in Hartford.

Action Items

1. Call Harold Ford's office (if not his campaign office). Ask him to support duly nominated DEMOCRATS in the upcoming general election. Even if Ford "survived" his "primary challenge" unscathed, that doesn't mean that he doesn't owe a debt to national party support.

2. Pressure Harry Reid's office to strip Joe Lieberman of all of his active committee assignments.

3. If you live in a Democratic district (Tanner, Gordon, Ford, Davis, Cooper), call their offices asking them to support duly elected Democratic nominees in 2006.

4. If you support a Democratic interest group who supported Lieberman in the primary, ask that they now support the only Democratic candidate running for the CT Senate seat. League of Conservation Voters, NARAL, NOW, Planned Parenthood -- if you donate to any of these groups, suspend any future donations unless they choose to support Ned Lamont.
