I can't remember where this took place, but I heard about a $100,000 lottery when you voted in a local election to increase voter turnout. It worked, but at what price I don't know. It obviously brought in people that were not going to vote in the first place, but I am not sure how educated they were about topics and candidates. I wonder how many people would have voted in Knox County had this been the case.

Paying people to vote

I can see how the chance to win a lottery would drive up voter turnout. Based on the outcome of the election I don't think voter knowledge of "topics and candidates" is a pre-requisite for voting now. Why should it matter if we hold a lottery for turnout? The Republicans already offer a type of lottery. Vote for them and your taxes will go down. People don't seem to mind being in debt up to their ears. As long as their grandchildren are paying the bill it is OK to have overcrowded classrooms and the lowest paid teachers in the region while we funnel millions of of our tax dollars into private commercial ventures that ought to be able to pay their own way. Maybe the Democrats just need to promise lots of corporate welfare combined with low taxes and the sheep will line up to vote for us. Later.

Arizona Voter Lottery

Actually there was one for a $1,000,000.00 lottery in Arizona.

Personally, I think it's ridiculous to do such a thing, as it diminishes the integrity of public elections.
