The Tennessee Dept. of Labor and Workforce development reports more than 1000 layoffs this week, including 200 in Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey's district in Sullivan Co., where Kelly Services of Bristol is laying off 200 workers beginning 7/1/2011 through 9/30/2011.

Cleo, Inc., a gift wrap company that has been operating in Memphis for nearly 60 years, is closing and laying off 588 workers starting 7/25 through 12/31. The company had previously announced they are moving the work overseas.

Also in Memphis, Medtronic Inc. is laying off 82 workers, starting 6/7 through 7/3. The medical equipment maker had previously announced company wide layoffs.

G&K Services, a large work uniform company, is laying off 34 workers at its Memphis facilities from 6/3 to 6/17.

In Nashville, the Federal Reserve Bank is laying off 37 workers on 7/31, and the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development is laying off 58 workers effective 7/20.

With the recent report of 400+ layoffs in Lt. Gov. Ramsey's district, today's announcement brings the total to more than 600 people who have lost their jobs there in the past few weeks.

Lt. Gov. Ramsey was named the "The Best Lawmaker for Business in Tennessee" by Business Tennessee magazine, and "has built a reputation as the leading voice for economic growth in the General Assembly," according to his bio.

When research was last conducted five years ago, the majority of children in poverty had parents who were unemployed. The new study shows the majority of children living in poverty now have at least one parent in work, but they are earning so little they are unable to drag their family above the poverty line.
